The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is a professional and educational body, dedicated to the promotion of environmental health and to encouraging the highest possible standards in the training and the work of environmental health professionals.
History
The institute was founded in 1883. It is a registered charity with a royal charter.
Structure
It is located in the UK, and has approximately 10,000 members worldwide, the majority being based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its head office is Chadwick Court (named after Edwin Chadwick), near the King's Reach Tower in Southwark London.
CIEH has offices in Wales, Northern Ireland, Dubai, and Orlando.
The CIEH has a wholly owned trading subsidiary, CIEH Ltd. CIEH Ltd profits are gift-aided to the charity and provide the majority of the organisation's income.
CIEH Ltd provides a range of certification training programmes covering topics such as food safety, first aid, health and safety, fire safety and environmental awareness. These are delivered through a network of registered trainers and training centres. It also organises conferences and seminars, produces the CIEH members' magazine Environmental Health News and manages the conference facilities, 15Hatfields, at the organisation's headquarters.
Function
As well as providing services and information to its members, the CIEH also advises government departments on environmental health and is consulted by them on proposed legislation relevant to the work of environmental health professionals. Its mission is to maintain, enhance and promote improvements in public and environmental health.
The CIEH was also involved as a partner in the development of the Occupational Safety & Health Consultants Register (OSHCR),[1] a centrally held register of qualified health and safety professionals working in the United Kingdom & Northern Ireland, with the intent of making it easier and more convenient for businesses and employers to find recognised health and safety consultants.
Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner
Since 2003 the CIEH has awarded the status of Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner.[2] Chartered status can be obtained only by Voting Members with five years of work experience as a qualified EHP, 60 hours of CPD accumulated within the last three years as well as passing the Chartered Status Assessment.[3]
Chartered Environmental Health Practitioners may use the post-nominal letters CMCIEH (Voting Members) or CFCIEH (Fellows).
