Charles Fane, 3rd Earl of Westmorland

Charles Fane, 3rd Earl of Westmorland (6 January 1635 – 18 September 1691) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 until 1666 when he inherited the peerage as Earl of Westmorland. His earlier titles included Baron le Despencer and Baron Bergavenny.

Fane was the son of Mildmay Fane, 2nd Earl of Westmorland and his first wife Grace Thornhurst, daughter of Sir William Thornhurst of Agnes Court, Kent. He was a student at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1649. He travelled abroad from 1652 to 1654 in France and the Netherlands. In 1660 he was elected Member of Parliament for Peterborough in the Convention Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Peterborough in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament and sat until 1666 when he inherited the earldom from his father and became a peer and member of the House of Lords.[2]

Fane was one of the nobles who deserted James II and took the side of William and Mary II. He died at the age of 56 and was buried at Apethorpe.

Family

Fane married firstly Elizabeth Nodes, daughter of Charles Nodes of Shephalbury, Hertfordshire on 15 June 1665. He married secondly Lady Dorothy Brudenell, daughter of Robert Brudenell, 2nd Earl of Cardigan He had no children by either wife and was succeeded by his half-brother, Vere Fane, 4th Earl of Westmorland.[2]
