Characters in the Pendragon Adventure

This is a list of characters in the book series The Pendragon Adventure by D. J. MacHale.

Major characters

Bobby Pendragon

Robert "Bobby" Pendragon is a fourteen-year-old boy in the first book and is a suburban basketball star living in the fictional suburb of Stony Brook, Connecticut, at the beginning of the series. He is said to have brown hair and brown eyes and to be, near the end of the series, only a little over 6' tall. He is interested in Courtney. He likes her a lot and she is his romantic interest throughout the series, though it can be assumed that, if he had continued on as a traveler rather than getting a second chance at life (in the last book), they would have remained friends, as Bobby develops intense feelings for Loor, the traveler from Zadaa, throughout the series. Bobby had even stated himself that they had grown into two different people as a result of his status as lead traveler and had he remained on Second Earth, their relationship, more than likely, would have flourished.

Mark Dimond

Mark Dimond /ˈdmənd/ is the lifelong best friend of the protagonist of the series, Bobby Pendragon. In the first book of the series, The Merchant of Death, he is fourteen years old, but by book eight, The Pilgrims of Rayne, he is seventeen years old. He loves eating carrots as he thinks they improve eyesight. He is a member of the prestigious science club at his school called Sci-clops. He is the pioneer of the technology he invented called Forge. He plans to release the technology on First Earth. He and Bobby's friend Courtney Chetwynde are Bobby's Acolytes. They keep his journals secret from the other citizens of Second Earth. After a dangerous incident involving the Traveler's nemesis, Saint Dane, Mark and Courtney decide to stow Bobby's journals in a bank vault, in Stony Brook, Connecticut, where they live.

Courtney Chetwynde

Courtney Chetwynde is a romantic interest for Bobby Pendragon, the Lead Traveler in the Pendragon series. In the first book in the series, The Merchant of Death, Courtney is fourteen years old, but by book seven, The Quillan Games, she is seventeen. She and Bobby's friend Mark Dimond are Bobby's acolytes. They keep his journals secret from the other citizens of Second Earth. After a dangerous incident involving the Traveler's nemesis, Saint Dane, Mark and Courtney decide to stow Bobby's journals in a bank vault, in Stony Brook, Connecticut, where they live.

Antagonists

Saint Dane

Saint Dane is the antagonist of the The Pendragon Adventure. Although clearly a conscious entity, Saint Dane's complete identity and history remains a mystery for most of the series. Initially assumed to be an evil Traveler, he is later referred to rather unspecifically as a "demon," and is finally revealed to be a spirit from Solara who believed in (and represents) the negative aspect of humanity. A shapeshifting and ruthless character, Saint Dane's ultimate goal is to break down Halla (everything that there is, was, or will be) so that he may rebuild it in his own design.

Saint Dane has the ability to transform into any person, animal and/or creature, and can take several other forms including becoming "smoke". His main features are his cold, icy blue eyes. He also has ghostly white skin and long gray hair, though in Black Water, whilst he is growing stronger, his hair burns, making him bald with five red scars on his head, and his eyes change from cold blue to nearly white. He always wears a dark, Asian-looking suit. He has been directly involved in the deaths of many important characters, including Osa, Uncle Press, Spader's father, Seegen, Loor (temporary), and Remudi, the Traveler from Ibara.

Nevva Winter

Nevva Winter is a fictional character in the Pendragon series by D. J. MacHale. She appears in The Quillan Games and in its sequels The Pilgrims of Rayne and Raven Rise. She then betrays all the other travelers and decides to join Saint Dane. But she eventually "fulfills her duty as a Traveler."

The Quillan Games

In The Quillan Games, Nevva befriends Bobby Pendragon by telling him she is heartsick after he sees Remudi, the traveler from Ibara, die playing the brutal games of Quillan. Later in the The Quillan Games, Bobby finds out that Nevva betrayed Quillan and the Travelers. Nevva's mother, Elli, then took her place as a Traveler. At the end of the book, however, it is made known that Nevva is actually the first (out of two so far, the other being Alexander Naymeer) Traveler to join Saint Dane’s side, and she aids in the destruction of Mr. Pop. She scammed Bobby the same way as Remudi and obtained some of the same powers as Saint Dane, including the power to shapeshift. She also seems to know the "true" nature of the travelers. Bobby now faces two enemies of the same power after the book ends.

The Pilgrims of Rayne

In the Pilgrims of Rayne, Nevva disguises herself as Telleo, a naive but kind doctor on Ibara who helps anyone, even the Jakills when they are injured. She seems to like things as they are on the island, not wishing the world to change. On First Earth, it is revealed that she saved Mark's parents from a plane crash in exchange for selling his invention, Forge, on First Earth, changing history. Telleo's identity is not revealed until the end of the book, when Saint Dane refers to Nevva as "Telleo".

Raven Rise

In Raven Rise, Nevva appears to Mark and demands his Traveler's ring. She threatens that if he does not, she will return to Second Earth and stop herself from saving Mark's parents from a plane crash. Mark, after thinking, reluctantly gives up his ring. When he does this however, Nevva seems disappointed. Why this is is unknown. Later, as a raven, she heals a dying boy and gives him the ring. We later find out that the boy is Alexander Naymeer, who goes on to create the Ravinian cult.

Soldiers of Halla

In Soldiers of Halla, we learn that Nevva was the one that had the idea to exile the opposers of Ravinia instead of killing them. She sends them to Eelong because she wanted to keep one Territory 'clean'. She decides that Saint Dane is evil, and joins the travelers. But before she could escape, Saint Dane kills her. Her final words hold the information Bobby needed to save the territories and kill Saint Dane. If not for her, the demon would have won. Her spirit was killed, instead of going to Solara because of her joining Saint Dane. However, it is likely she was revived after Saint Dane's defeat, as the history of all territories were rewritten so that Saint Dane never interfered with them.

Alexander Naymeer

Alexander Naymeer /nˈmɪər/ first appears in Raven Rise as the main antagonist. Naymeer was originally chosen to be Bobby's mentor, but he became corrupted by Saint Dane, so the job went to Press. He is the leader of the cult Ravinia. Originally a child prodigy, he came extremely close to death at the age of seven. However, he was saved when Saint Dane gave him a Traveler ring stolen from Mark Dimond, healing him and allowing him to discover Halla. Due to Saint Dane's interference, he becomes the sadistic villain seen in Raven Rise, ultimately causing and then dying in the collapse of Yankee Stadium later deemed the "Bronx Massacre."

Veego and LaBerge

Veego and LaBerge are siblings, business partners, and the CEOs of the Quillan Games. They were originally from Veelox and were taken to Quillan by Mr. Kayto (Saint Dane in disguise) after the incident on Veelox. They were taken to the other territories where they stole the ideas from the territories and "created" them on Quillan. The games included wippen from Eelong, spinney-do from Cloral, and the game from Zadaa involving knocking off pegs from your opponent. They also stole tang knives from Eelong and air bubbles from Cloral. This angered Bobby, though he realized they knew no better about mixing the territories. Bobby eventually lost Quillan after the plan involving winning the Grand X backfired. Veego and LaBerge, to Bobby's horror, were immediately restored to their celebrity status while Quillan lay to waste. LaBerge loves to play games, and Veego loves the attention and money she makes from the games, so they make a good team. Veego also appears in Raven Rise to be given the island of Ibara from the trustees.

Other Travelers

Loor

Loor is the Traveler from Zadaa, one of the ten territories. She is a Batu (a tribe on Zadaa) and is a Ghee warrior of that tribe. Since the Batu live above-ground on a scorching planet, their skin is very dark. Loor's eyes are brown. Her hair is dark, almost black, and is tied in a long braid. Loor has an extremely athletic body with "zero body-fat" and is initially taller than Bobby when described in the first book. She does not trust Bobby at first but soon does. She temporarily dies in the sixth book.

Vo Spader

Vo Spader is the traveler for Cloral, and is one of the last generation of travelers. In the books, Spader is described as a tall young man with tan skin and Asian features. He has long black hair and is always wearing an aquaneer suit, which is black and yellow, and normally has the sleeves cut off, however in one scene he is wearing a uniform with the sleeves in respect for his father. There has been one photo drawn of Spader by actual artists for the Pendragon books.

Vincent Van Dyke

Vincent Van Dyke (nicknamed Gunny because of his refusal to fire a gun) is the Traveler from First Earth in the fantasy book series Pendragon. Gunny is a tall African American male, who works at the Manhattan Tower Hotel in New York as the Bell Captain. He is introduced in the books by helping Bobby Pendragon and Vo Spader escape from gangsters in the subway that holds the Flume. He appears consecutively in Books III, IV, and V.

Kasha

Kasha is the Traveler from the jungle territory of Eelong. Kasha made her appearance in book 5 of the series, Black Water (novel), although she has been mentioned in later books. After Kasha's death at the end of book 5, Eelong no longer has a Traveler because Kasha was a Traveler from Bobby's generation, which was the last generation of Travelers. However, in the end of Raven rise, she appeares again as a spirit and help fight Saint Dane to the end with Bobby Pendragon.

Alder

Alder is a Bedoowan knight from the territory Denduron. He is the 4th Traveler that Bobby meets on his journey. Alder is described as clumsy (except during combat), but is also regarded as the kindest and most honorable of the Travelers. Over the course of the series, he becomes one of Bobby's best friends. In battle, Alder is a fierce warrior, and he is skilled in healing other Travelers. During the events of Raven Rise, he tries to leave Denduron (to return weapons used in the previous book) and discovers the Milago and Bedoowan have united and will use tak to destroy their enemies. He attempts to stop the combined nations, but is captured and sentenced to execution. Whilst in his jail cell, Bobby finds him and the two escape, heading for Second Earth. He assists Bobby in healing their ally and fellow Traveler Patrick Mac when Patrick appears in the flume mortally wounded. In the climax of Book 9, the UN's vote is revealed to favor Ravinia, whereupon the 70,000 protesters gathered in Yankee Stadium are pulled into a giant flume which Naymeer creates, causing the true Bronx Massacre. Alder tries to stop him, but before he can make it to the podium and take out Naymeer, his Ravinian Guards shoot, killing him almost instantly. Later in The Soldiers of Halla, he and the other Travelers appear and help battle Saint Dane's armies while Bobby himself defeats Saint Dane, subsequently saving all of Halla.

Aja Killian

Aja Killian /ˈʒə ˈkɪljɨn/ is the Traveler from Veelox. Aja was an orphan, raised in a group home that trained intelligent children to work to their full potential. The name of the group, the Jakills come from her. She was adopted by Evangeline, one of the workers at the home, who she now calls her aunt and acolyte. The former traveler was Headmistress Nilssin, who was the headmistress of the school Aja attended. She was then promoted to what is called a "Senior Phader" on her territory. A "Senior Phader" is a person who helps control other people's "jumps" into a "Matrix" like dreamworld called Lifelight. She is concerned about the fact that the people of her territory prefer the 'fantasy world' over reality. Her territory is crumbling because its inhabitants spend more time in this dreamworld instead of living in the real world. To destroy her territory's dependence on this dreamworld, Lifelight, she creates "The Reality Bug". This bug is a computer virus that makes Lifelight fantasies less than desirable, so that people may be encouraged to leave Lifelight and live their own lives. However, the bug works far too well, actually harming the people in Lifelight, creating the conflict in The Reality Bug.

In The Pilgrims of Rayne, the other Travelers visit Veelox and Aja tells them that the Lifelight system is destroyed. After the people in Lifelight ran out of gloid, a food substitute, the people were dying in such mass numbers so quickly they were not even pulled from their fantasies. After facing this morbid reality, Aja comes up with a plan to save as many people as she could: she moved everybody to an island, which is known as Ibara. She plans to execute a pilgrimage once the population of Ibara is steady to repopulate and recivilize the original territory, Veelox. This pilgrimage she tries ultimately fails. Bobby Pendragon asks her to leave her home territory of Veelox for reasons undisclosed, but after pressing for the reason why, Aja was explained to by Siry Remudi, the traveler from Ibara, that she would be assassinated before the departure of the forty. She is afraid that her survival may change the future of Veelox and Ibara forever. She appears in the end of Raven Rise with all of the other travelers. She is currently deceased on Ibara but alive on Veelox.

Patrick Mac

Patrick Mac is the Traveler from Third Earth, also a teacher and librarian. The Traveller before him was his student Em Stickler whose acolyte was Jay Oh (also Patrick's student), and both are much younger than he is. He appears in The Never War, The Pilgrims of Rayne, and Raven Rise and The Soldiers Of Halla. He is about Bobby's size, and looks like what Bobby Pendragon says to be a sort of nerd. In The Never War he showed Gunny and Bobby information and compiled a simulation of what would have happened if the Hindenburg did not crash. In The Pilgrims of Rayne he almost went over the brink of insanity when he woke up one day with 'dados' (robots) on Third Earth, where he met up with Bobby and met Courtney. It was revealed by a 'dado' receptionist at the doctors that Patrick's last name was Mac after addressing him as "Mr. Mac" in The Pilgrims of Rayne. He plays a role trying to find out what happened to the Earth territories in Raven Rise, but is killed when a Ravinian truck swerves in front of his car, causing a deadly collision. He, along with all the other travelers, appears in the end.

Siry Remudi

Siry Remudi /sɪˈr rɛˈmdi/ is the Traveler from the territory Ibara and the adopted son of Jen Remudi, who was the previous Traveler. He first appears in The Pilgrims of Rayne as a member of the rebellious group, the Jakills (the name comes from Aja Killian, the Traveler from Veelox), in the jungles of Ibara. Gradually, Bobby convinces Siry to accept himself as a Traveler, and they help lead a battle to gain the territory Ibara. However, Siry ends separated from Ibara when Bobby blows up Ibara's flume. Siry returns to Zadaa with Loor to return the dygo, later appearing in an unknown area with the other travelers at the end of Raven Rise.

Elli Winter

Elli Winter was first chosen to be the Traveler from Quillan. She was the mother of Nevva Winter, and was first seen by Bobby when he was visiting Mr. Pop. At the end of The Quillian Games, Elli reveals her true nature to Bobby. Elli was supposed to be the Traveler until Nevva was ready, but was frightened of the stories she heard and therefore handed the task to her daughter Nevva. When Nevva betrayed the Travelers, Elli accepted her task. She appears in the end of Raven Rise along with all the other travelers in an unknown place. In The Soldiers of Halla she helps by "unabandoning" Nevva and bringing her to the side of the Travelers.

Penultimate Travelers

Uncle Press

Press is Bobby's Uncle and the previous Traveler of Second Earth. Press was the man who brought Bobby on his first flume ride and tried to teach Bobby about being a traveler. Sadly he was killed in the second Pendragon Adventure The Lost City of Faar. When Saint Dane opened a flume to First Earth where bullets shot out in a frenzy aimed at Press, but before he died, he told Bobby he would see him again. Press also trained Bobby, without Bobby's realization, by bringing him on random trips, secretly preparing him for challenges Bobby would face in the books, such as horse riding, parachuting, and much more.

Osa

Osa was the adoptive mother of Loor, and like her daughter, a fierce warrior. However, different from Loor, Osa was more loving and caring with her allies. She was present in one of Bobby's flashbacks of his Uncle Press, where she appeared at a party with him. She was described as being incredibly beautiful and had kind eyes even though she did not speak (of course, Bobby had no idea at that time that she was a Traveler). In his flashback, Bobby surmised that she seemed to be Uncle Press's girlfriend. However, this was not confirmed.

In Merchant of Death, Osa appeared on Second Earth to give Mark Dimond his acolyte ring. She was later present when Bobby awoke in a hut in the Milago village. As Press had been captured, Osa took over Bobby's Traveler training, educating him. She told him information about the Travelers' roles and abilities, including the ability to hear all languages as their own and cause others to perceive their speech as their native language. Osa also showed Bobby the Milago mines, showing him the adverse conditions the Milago had to work in and the tyrannous dominance that the Bedoowan had imposed upon the Milago. Upon their exit of the mines, however, Osa, Loor, and Bobby were ambushed by a group of Bedoowan knights. During the fight with the Bedoowans, Osa was tragically shot full of arrows by Bedoowan sharpshooters and killed. Her daughter replaced her as the Traveler from Zadaa.

Benn Spader

Benn Spader was the penultimate traveler from Cloral. He was well-acquainted with Press, but met his demise when he was poisoned by Saint Dane. He had visited the city of Faar and was honored among its people, thus granting his son safe passage.

Seegen

Seegen was a klee (a sentient cat) and the Traveler from Eelong. He made a map from Leeandra to Black Water and was killed similarly to Spader's father, and with exactly the same poison. He was administered the poison by Saint Dane who was disguised as his acolyte, Yorn, and died upon his arrival from the flume on Second Earth. His daughter, Kasha, replaced him.

Jen Remudi

Remudi was the Traveler from the territory Ibara. He appeared briefly in The Quillan Games, where he was competing in a Tato match, (a game that has two people fight to the death on a raised platform), as Challenger Yellow against Challenger Green, (who was Saint Dane in a different form), when he fell off the Tato platform to his death. This was broadcast all over Quillan on giant television screens on the top of the buildings just as Bobby Pendragon arrived to this territory. His adopted son, Siry, is the new Traveler for Ibara.
