Chandigarh capital region
Chandigarh Capital Region or Greater Chandigarh is an area in the Punjab and Haryana states of India, and consists of the cities of Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali, Zirakpur and suburbs listed below.
Status
The Government of India have given nod to the status of Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR) and formation of its Regional Planning Board (RPB) in January 2012.[1] The idea behind the move was to provide better and similar facilities to the residents of the region and better coordination between the working of all administrations of the towns in the region.[2]
Master Plan
In January 2013, the 'Master Plan 2031' was submitted to the UT administrator.[3]
Suburbs
Present
Apart from Panchkula (Haryana) and Ajitgarh (Punjab), the urban conglomerate of the tricity presently also includes the following suburbs in the neighbouring state of Punjab.
- Zirakpur (Mohali District)
- Dera Bassi (Mohali District)
- Kharar (Mohali District)

The following areas in the two states could become parts of this zone in the future:
Punjab
- Mubarakpur (Mohali District)
- Kurali (Mohali District)
- Rupnagar (Rupnagar District)
Haryana
- Kalka (Panchkula District)
- Pinjore (Panchkula District)
- Ambala (Ambala District)
- Barwala (Panchkula District)
- Morni (Panchkula District)
- Naraingarh (Ambala District)
- Raipur Rani (Panchkula District)
Population
The combined population of the three cities was 1165111 (1.16 million) as per the 2001 census.
Industry
Dera Bassi - Lalru is another belt with mostly medium industry, this place has many spinning mills including the Nahar group. Bhushan Steel also has a presence here.
Hindustan Machine Tools has a tractor factory in Pinjore, while Associated Cement Companies has a cement factory in Pinjore. Bharat Electronics Limited or B.E.L has a factory in Panchkula.
Punwire and Puncom have factories in Mohali as does Verka, and Ranbaxy and Godrej. This region is the zonal headquarters for a large number of banks, their offices are mainly in the "Bank Square" in sector 17 Chandigarh. This area also houses the regional office (usually covering Punjab, Northern Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir) for a lot of FMCG companies.
In the service industry, Dell, Quark and Infosys are the key players with a presence here.
