The Champ Car Grand Prix of Road America was an open wheel car race held on the Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It was a round of the PPG Indy Car World Series for most of CART's existence, the first race being held in 1982. Prior to its cancellation in 2008 with the absorption of the Champ Car circuit into the rival Indy Racing League, the race at Road America had been held annually every year since with the exception of 2005.
2003 event
The 2003 event almost didn't take place. Mario Andretti was instrumental in keeping Champ Car racing at Road America. CART had severed its ties with the track as a legal resolution of payment issues from the prior year's race and for the upcoming 2003 event. Andretti acted as an intermediary between CART President Chris Pook and Road America President George Bruggenthies. After six weeks of negotiations both sides came to terms and signed a two year contract in April 2003. The 2003 event was named the "Mario Andretti Grand Prix of Road America" in honor of Andretti's efforts.[1] It was not the end of troubles, though. Champ Car and Road America were unable to arrange a race in 2005,[2] but the track returned to the schedule in 2006.[3]
