"Chahun Main Ya Naa" (English: Should I love you or not?) is a romantic Hindi song from the 2013 Bollywood film, Aashiqui 2. Composed by Jeet Gannguli, the song is sung by Arijit Singh and Palak Muchhal, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil. The music video of the track features actors Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor.[1]

Background

Palak Muchhal with Mahesh Bhatt at the Audio release of Aashiqui 2. Mucchal was offered to sing "Chahun Main Ya Naa" a month later she recorded the song "Meri Aashiqui".

The song is composed by Jeet Gannguli. On 6 April 2012, Mukesh Bhatt reported that the songs composed by Gannguli has already been finalised and "locked"; "Jeet has given excellent music. I'm sure he will be one of the best music directors of the country in no time".[2] On 5 May 2012, Gannguli's compositions in the song was confirmed by Bhatt. Gannguli collaborated with Bhatt for Blood Money (2012) and was working with the compositions of Raaz 3D (2012) during the time of his venture.[3] The song was shot across 10 locations and was the only song that was continuously shot from the first day to the last.[4]

The song is sung by Arijit Singh and Palak Muchhal, marking their first collaboration in Bollywood which is followed by "Dhokha Dhadi" from R... Rajkumar (2013).[5] The album consist a duet version of the song "Tum Hi Ho" titled "Meri Aashiqui" which is also sung by the duo.[6] When asked about the proffer for the song in the film, Mucchal stated; "I was so excited when I was called to sing for Aashiqui 2 as I've grown up listening to Aashiqui songs! There was a big responsibility on the music team because music of Aashiqui 1 was super hit and we had to match the standards".[7] Mucchal was offered to sing "Chahun Main Ya Naa" a month later she recorded for the song "Meri Aashiqui" from the same film, composed by Mithoon.[8] The song is mixed and mastered by Eric Pillai from Future Sound of Bombay, in the assistance of Michael Edwin Pillai.[9]

Release

The track "Chahun Main Ya Naa" was released digitally on 4 April 2013, in the soundtrack of the album.[10] A lyrical version of the audio track was released through the YouTube channel of T-Series on 5 April 2013.[11] The music video of the track was officially released through the YouTube channel of T-Series on 9 April 2013.[9] On 17 June 2013, a remix version of the video track by DJ Khushi was released.[12]

Critical reception

The song received mixed to positive response from music critics.

Rajiv Vijayakar of Bollywood Hungama wrote: "The use of the flute to speak the language of lingering love and complement the singers truly lifts this track to a different level along with Palak's supple – and as can be clearly made out – highly-trained artistry".[24] Rafat from Glamsham, calling the song "one of the finest love duets of the year", opined: "the background musical arrangements and its lyrics are the highlight of the track".[25] Writing for Bollywood Spice, Bodrul Chaudhury commented; "Both Palak and Arjit deliver a great duet together in this romantic number, which again has great lyrics attached to it. The great rhythm to this song makes it memorable and it stays in your mind after having listened to it".[26] Reviewers of The Times of India felt the song will grow on the listeners on a few hearing.[27]

Apart from the positive reaction from the critics, the song also received some negative reviews like; Shivi – Reflections from Koimoi felt the song is "an average duet and does not offer much to the listener".[28] Atta Khan of Planet Bollywood praised the contributions of Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon with their single compositions, but believed that the remaining songs by Jeet Gannguli lacked freshness and were too repetitive apart from "Chahun Main Ya Na" and "Milne Hai Mujhse Aayi".[29] Critics of Bollymeaning.com, rated the song as "slightly better than Okay".[30] Similar sentiments were echoed by Shresht Poddar of High on Score who thought, melody wise the song is "pretty mediocre".[31]
