Certified Management Accountant

IMA’s CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification is a professional credential that can be earned in the advanced management accounting and financial management field. The certification signifies that the person possesses knowledge in the areas of financial planning, analysis, control, decision support, and professional ethics, the skills most in demand on finance teams around the world. The CMA is a U.S.-based, globally recognized certification offered by IMA® (The Institute of Management Accountants).

CMA-certified professionals work inside organizations of all sizes, industries, and types, including manufacturing and services, public and private enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, academic institutions, government entities, and multinational corporations. To date, more than 45,000 CMAs have been certified in more than 100 countries. Employers can be assured that every CMA they hire has passed a rigorous exam, met an educational requirement, experience requirement, and demonstrated a commitment to continuous learning through Continuing Professional Education (CPE).

The CMA exam consists of 11 content domains organized into two exam parts.

Part 1 – Financial Reporting, Planning, Performance, and Control

Part 2 – Financial Decision Making

The CMA exams are conducted in English and Chinese. The English exams are computer-based and administered through the worldwide network of Prometric testing centers. Each exam part lasts four hours with 100 multiple-choice questions and two 30-minute essay questions. The CMA exams are given during the following three testing window periods: January/February, May/June and September/October. The Chinese CMA exams are paper-based, administered three times per year, also by Prometric.

Requirements
In addition to successfully passing the exams, to become certified, CMA candidates must fulfill education and experience requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Two continuous years of professional experience

For certified CMAs, 30 hours of CPE credits, including two hours of ethics, and annual IMA Membership are required to maintain active status.
