Central University of Rajasthan is an educational institution in Rajasthan, India. The Central University of Rajasthan was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 25 of 2009, The Gazette of India, No. 27, published on 20 March 2009) as a new Central University, and is fully funded by the Government of India.

The Central Universities Bill 2009 aims at creating one new central university each in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.^[1] It also seeks to convert Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Chhattisgarh, Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand into Central universities.^{[2] [3]}

Chancellor

The first Chancellor of this university is kuldeep ranawat popularly known as Kuls Rocks.He was appointed as Chancellor of this university in January-2014. Dr. Kuls is an internationally respected development thinker, policy maker, telecom inventor and entrepreneur who has spent over four decades in Information and Communications Technology and related human and national developments initiatives.

Vice Chancellor

The President of India, in his capacity as the Visitor of the University, has appointed Prof. M. M. Salunkhe as the first Vice Chancellor of the University, now the present Vice Chancellor is Prof. A. P. Singh.

Campus

The university had started to function from its temporary campus at Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur in the year 2009 with only two courses. In the year 2010, it shifted to R.K. Patni College in Kishangarh, Ajmer which offered much larger premises to run six new courses.

The Rajasthan state government allocated over 518 acres of land for the permanent site of the Central University of Rajasthan at Bander Sindri near Kishangarh on Jaipur – Ajmer Road (NH-8). From the year 2011, the university began construction of its permanent campus at the site allocated to it. In the year 2012, the university started functioning from its permanent campus with a total of twenty different P.G. courses and ten different Integreted M.Sc. courses.

The campus currently comprises 8 buildings and 3 semiparmanent which house the girls hostel, boys hostel, the academic and administrative departments, and one auditorium having the sitting capacity of more than 1000 people. Sustainability and environmental considerations are integral to the focus of academics in the university, hence, sustainable construction practices have been employed in the construction of the campus like the use of fly ash bricks and smart usage of materials on-site for construction. Solar powered street lights provide lighting in the campus. Energy usage is optimized by keeping the temperature within the buildings at an optimal range by using double layered glass panes for windows, and passive subterranean cooling system coupled with thermal insulation on the roof of the buildings.

More buildings are being constructed with the entire development plan for the campus envisioning a 30-year time span for complete construction and development of the campus.

The architectural style is a fusion of traditional Rajasthani architectural styles and features and contemporary design elements. The chhatri and jaali are used as prominent design elements in the buildings giving the buildings the look of a unique blend of the traditional and the modern.

Academics

Admission

Admission into Central University of Rajasthan is highly competitive. Central University Combined Entrance Test (CUCET) is the all India admission test through which one gains admission into Central University of Rajasthan and the Central Universities of Bihar, Jammu, Jharkhand, Kerala, Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, Orissa and Tamil Nadu.^[4]

Admissions through CUCET are handled at the level of each of these 10 Central Universities, for their respective programs. Central University of Rajasthan gives 70% weight to one's CUCET marks and 30% weight to graduation marks for entry into post graduate programmes. Some programmes also require the candidate to go through interviews and group discussions for admission.

In CUCET 2012, the university received 43% of the applications of the total received by seven other central universities which participated in the Central University Common Examination Test (CUCET)-2012. In other words, it received 8,700 applications for its twenty post graduate programmes.^[5]

Programmes and Degrees

The university is a fully residential university modeled on the lines of Jawaharlal Nehru University with a strong focus on offering post graduate and doctoral academic programmes. Emphasis would also be laid on conducting research projects and building advanced centres of learning and excellence in various fields.

There are twenty post graduate programmes and ten integrated M.Sc. programmes with each one constituting one academic department. Doctoral programmes for each one of them has also started in 2012. Currently Bachelor in vocational (Interior designing) has been started in January-2014 under school of Architecture. The departments are part of the following schools:^[6]

Library

The Central Library of the university has been acquiring a wide range of knowledge resources for its students and researchers since its inception. It currently has more than 9504 reference books and text books, and online access of 3,000 journals and a few electronics related databases under the UGC/ INFONET Digital Library consortium of INFLIBNET.

It also has access to Knimbus platform which is a collaborative knowledge platform that provides single point search across the publications and sources.^[7]

Students

The university has students from both India and abroad. Currently there are students from more than 20 states of India. The university has international students mainly from the Middle East and South Asia. On campus, the student population has reached around 1050 and it is expected to peak to around 5000 in near future.

Besides academics, a range of societies and clubs exist for students like the student-run media group called Astitva, the Film Club, the photography club known as the Lenswala and the Economics Society of CURAJ. The annual cultural fest is known as Marukriti. The Economania, Math Earth and Myriad Hues are the annual fests of the respective department and student societies of the university. The university's students also participate in regional and national level inter-university fests and competitions like the Association of Indian Universities annual fest known as UNIFEST.
