Central University of Kerala (CUK) is one of the 15 new Central Universities established under The Central Universities Act, 2009 (Act No.25 of 2009). CUK aims to extend the scope of learning through a holistic methodology that accommodates diverse linguistic, scientific and cultural traditions. CUK is situated at Kasaragod, the northern-most district of Kerala, and has state-wide jurisdiction. It started functioning from a transit campus in Vidyanagar housing the Administrative Offices, Humanities Schools, University Library, Computer Centre, Language Lab, and the University Guest House. The Riverside Transit Campus at Padannakad, 35 km further south, houses the Science Schools. The permanent campus of the university is being set up at Periye on a panoramic stretch of 310 acres of land beside the National Highway, at which academic activity will commence from the ensuing academic year.[1]

CUK is committed to the task of generating and disseminating knowledge in cutting edge areas of learning through innovative teaching/learning methodologies which ensure the maturation of individuals through physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth. This challenging academic mission is enthused by the ideals of interdisciplinary, meaningful local-global interaction, ecological balance and equilibrium of physical and spiritual faculties.

Our holistic scheme of education facilitates critical insight, transparent methodology and scientific temperament, even as it emphasizes the value of tolerance, peace and joy. The concept education as envisioned by the Central University of Kerala transcends the barriers of time and place, actualizing a confluence of various cultures and traditions upholding the rights and dignity of human individual across all classes, knowledge systems and all ages. We wish to set a new benchmark for quality higher education which is charges with the missionary zeal to establish a world that respects the equality of genders, classes and creeds; promotes scientific thought, cherishes the dreams of inclusive development and celebrates the balance of culture and nature.[2]

Academic Programmes Offered

The PG Programmes

Admission to the PG programmes is subject to applicants’ fulfilling eligibility conditions for various programmes as notified in the University website www.cukerala.ac.in.

The duration of the postgraduate programme is 4 semesters. Each semester has a duration of 16-18weeks,with 5 working days and 30 instructional hours per week.

The programmes are organised under Choice Based Credit and Semester (CBCS) pattern. Curricular innovations of CBCS provide vertical integration of knowledge and equip the students for successful performance in any competitive task in any part of the world. Students are offered two types of courses: (a) Core courses, identified by each Department, aimed at providing a broad base in the concerned subject of study; (b) Elective courses, chosen by the students in consultation with the Faculty Advisor. In addition to these, each student will have to do a Dissertation/Project work emphasising the application of knowledge to real problems. The minimum total credits required for the successful completion of a PG programme is 72 credits within 4 semesters. Out of the 72 credits, a student has to secure a minimum of 48 but not more than 60 credits, including that of the Dissertation for Core courses, and a minimum of 12 but not more than 24 credits for Elective courses.[1]

The Ph.D Programme

The programme of study and research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) of the Central University of Kerala may be pursued in a Department of the University or in a research institution recognized by the University for the purpose. Candidates seeking registration to the doctoral programme may submit their applications for registration in response to the notification in this respect issued by the University. Applications for registration shall be submitted to the Head of the University Department concerned in the prescribed form along with the prescribed fees. In the case of candidates intending to do research at a recognized research institution, the applications shall be submitted to the Head of the University Department concerned through the Head of that institution along with his recommendation and facility certificate.

Students’ Support Services

Scholarships/Financial Support

CUK offers various scholarships to its PG Students.

Merit Scholarship (Rs. 1500 per month) is awarded to the students who obtain the I, II and III ranks (in the CUCET for admission to the programme during the Semester I and for the students who obtain the I, II and III ranks in the class in the subsequent semesters).

Merit cum Means Scholarship (Rs. 1250 per month) is awarded to 25% of the students admitted in each PG programme. It is based on the merit in each semester exam and the parental income (not more than Rs. 1,50,000/- per annum) of the students.

For M.Phil./Ph.D. students, a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000/- and 8000/- respectively (or as revised by the UGC from time to time) is given.[1]

Hostel Facility

Limited seats in separate hostels for girls and boys are available. They will be allotted on merit basis on a first come-first served basis. Application for hostel accommodation may be submitted in the prescribed form to the Dean of Students’ Welfare.[1]

Transportation Facility

Transport facility is available to girl students from their hostels to the respective University campuses at subsidised rates.[1]

University Library

Central University of Kerala has four well-equipped libraries - one at its main campus at Vidyanagar and the other at the Riverside Transit Campus at Padannakad. They act as centres of information for the academic community of the University ensuring fair access to knowledge. Library facilities and services include fully air-conditioned and automated environment, Wi-Fi network in the University Library at the main campus, free Internet access to all, UGC-Infonet, online journal access in the libraries and departments, inter-library loan, video show, reprographic service, article alert, groupmail, locker, and WebOPAC.[1]

NME-ICT

CUK is part of the National Mission on Educat ion through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT) Project. This prestigious project of MHRD is launched to cater to the learning needs of more than 50 crore Indians and to provide a one stop solution to all learning requirements. It visualises the launch of a national movement for content and question generation, provides digital information for faculty empowerment, boosts e-Governance, customises Open Source Tools, and facilitates Content delivery through EduSAT and narrowcasting of TV signals. CUK Internet connectivity is a part of this scheme and NME-ICT connection is extended to all faculty, students and office staff. Using this service, all CUK staff and students use Zimbra based open-source official email accounts. Monitoring and distribution of NMEICT is done using open-source Squid based proxy, and uses open-source SARG for report generation. Online journals, accessible through UGC-Infonet, are also made available in the library and the department s through NME- ICT connection.[1]

Students’ Council

The Students’ Council is a student body comprising 40 student representatives of which 20 members are elected and 20 members are nominated representing the respective departments. The Council also has an Executive Committee composed of 10 members. The President, two Vice Presidents, the General Secretary, two Joint Secretaries and four Executive Committee Members are the office bearers of the Students’ Council.[1]
