The Central University of Karnataka (CUK) was established by an Act of the Parliament (No. 3 of 2009) at Gulbarga, Karnataka. It is one of the 16 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan Period to address to the concerns of ‘equity and access’ and to increase the access to quality higher education by people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrolment Ratio of less than the national average of 11%.

The CUK, with its territorial jurisdiction all over Karnataka, has been initiated its activities from the academic year beginning August 2009 in keeping with the philosophy of achieving and maintaining the highest levels of academic excellence, sensitivity to equity and access in enrolment and recruitment and emerging as a premier national educational and research institution in the country.

650 acres of land at Kadaganchi Suntanur villages on the Gulbarga-Waghdhari Inter-State Highway in Aland taluka identified by the Karnataka State Government has been handed over to the university, where the work of construction of boundary wall is nearing completion and work on various buildings for the first phase of campus development will begin soon. The university is functioning from its temporary premises at the IInd floor of Karya Soudha, Gulbarga University Campus where the administrative office, classrooms, library, computer lab and other infrastructure is located.

History

Central University of Karnataka in Gulbarga of Karnataka, India has been established through an Act of Parliament: “The Central Universities Act, 2009" by Govt. of India.[1]

The university is currently operating from its temporary campus at Gulbarga University.[2] 650 acres (2.6 km2) of land at Kadaganchi Suntanur villages on the Gulbarga-Waghdhari Inter-State Highway in Aland taluka identified by the Karnataka State Government.[3]

The Central Universities Bill 2009 aims at creating one new central university each in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.[4] It also seeks to convert Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Chhattisgarh, Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand into Central universities.[5]

Department of Commerce

Department of Commerce offers courses in Commerce stream.Department of Commerce offers postgraduate degree in commerce(M.Com).The department also offers students to purse PhD programs in various fields of commerce.Dr K.Padamasree is the Head of Department of Commerce.

Department of Economic Studies and Planning

The Department of Economic Studies and Planning offers courses in the field of Economics.Students can opt for an postgraduate degree in Economics or they can go for Ph.D award in the field of Economics.Prof Pushpa.M.Savadatti is the Head of Department of Economics.

School of Earth Sciences

School of Earth Sciences provides students to study in the areas of Geography and Geology.School of Earth Sciences provides postgraduate degree and PhD in Geography and Geology.Prof Syed Ashfaq Ahmed is the dean of School of Earth Sciences.School of Earth Sciences has following departments:

Department of Geography

Department of Geology

The Department of Geology offers postgraduate degree courses in Applied Geology and Geo-informatics. Department of Geology offers PhD program for the students in the field of Geology.Dr. Mohammed Aslam is the Head of Department of Geology.

School of Humanities and Languages

The School of Humanities and Languages provides courses in the field of Language and literature. The School of Humanities and Languages offers both postgraduate and PhD awards in the field of Languages and literature. Prof.N.Nagaraju is the dean of School of Humanities and Languages. The School of Humanities and Languages consist of following departments and one center for classical language.

Department of Kannada Literature and Culture

The department of Kannada Literature and Culture offers students to pursue postgraduate course in the field of Kannada Literature and Culture. The Department also offers PhD programs in the field of Kannada Literature and Culture. Dr. Shivaganga Ruma is the Head of the Department of Kannada Literature and Culture.

Department of English

Department of English provides students courses in English Literature. The Department of English offers both postgraduate degree in English Literature and allows students to take research in the field of English Literature. Dr.Basavaraj.P.Donur is the Head of the Department of English.

Department of Hindi

The Department of Hindi offers courses in Hindi Language. The Department offers Masters of Arts degree in Hindi and the department also offers PhD program in Hindi language. Prof. Sunitha Anil Manjanbail is the Head of Department of Hindi.Dr Ganesh Pawar & Dr Suraj Kumar are Associate and Assistant Professor of the Department respectively.

Center for Classical Language-Kannada

The Center for Classical Language offers students to take advanced studies in Kannada Language and Literature. Prof B.Mallikarjun is the director of Center for Classical Language-Kannada.

School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences provides courses in the field of History,Psychology and Social Work. The School offers postgraduate degrees in Psychology,Social Work and History. The School also offers PhD awards in Psychology,History and Social Work. Dr Romate John is the dean of School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The School consists of following departments:

Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work provides only Master's degree in Social Work. Dr Channaveer R.M is the Head of the Department of Social Work.

School of Engineering

Tech-Integrated Engineering with limited specialization through stream Electives Mechanical,Electrical,Electronics,Civil,Computer Science. The course provides a solid foundation in fundamentals of science and technology; develop a scientific temper and spirit,instill professional ethics and fulfill the needs of society. The course highlights are the exit after B Tech- 4 years and Internship in all summers. The candidates who secure a minimum of CGPA 6.5 in B.Tech can pursue M.Tech with the option to leave Engineering Program and chose other science programs of CUK through credit transfer. Limited option for lateral entry from other disciplines. The School of Engineering has following departments:

Department of Chemical Engineering

Department of Chemical Engineering offers B.Tech and M.Tech in Chemical Engineering. The students can pursue M.Tech degree soon after completion of B.Tech degree.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department of Mechanical Engineering provides both B.Tech degree and M.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Department of Electronic Engineering

Department of Electronic Engineering offers both B.Tech and M.Tech degree in the field of Electronic Engineering

Department of Electronic Communication Engineering

Department of Bio Engineering
