Central Catholic High School, often abbreviated to Central Catholic or CCHS, is a private Catholic high school in Bloomington, Illinois that serves approximately 350 students in the Bloomington-Normal area.[1][8]

History

CCHS has roots in St. Mary's School, built by Holy Trinity Parish in 1884 at the intersection of Locust and Center Streets.[9] Initially a grade school, the building was altered in 1886 to add high school classes. St. Mary's School had its first high school graduates in 1898.[10] The cornerstone for a separate high school building was laid in September 1927 next to Holy Trinity Church at 712 N. Center Street.[9] The school opened on 3 September 1928 as Trinity High School with fifty-nine graduates that spring.[10] In fall 1967, Trinity High School became a diocesan school and was renamed Central Catholic High School to reflect the role of other regional parishes in the governance of the school.[1][11] The Center Street school building was torn down in 2005 after a new building was opened 25 August 2003 at 1201 Airport Road.[9]

Athletics

The Central Catholic Saints won the class 4A state football championship in 2008. With prior football championships in classes 1A, 2A, and 3A, Central Catholic High School is the first school in the state of Illinois to win titles in four different classes. Their 8-year reign as intercity champions came to an end in 2011 with a 34-8 loss by their rival, Normal U-High. The Central Catholic boy's basketball team won the class 2A state championship in 2014.[12]

Community engagement

Students are required to perform 5 hours of community service per quarter, with the service intended to be connected to one of the Catholic Works of Mercy.[3]
