Cen is the Mandarin pinyin romanization of the Chinese surname written in Chinese character. It is romanized Ts'en in Wade–Giles, and variously as Shum, Sam in Cantonese. Cen is listed 67th in the Song dynasty classic text Hundred Family Surnames.[1] As of 2008, it is the 235th most common surname in China, shared by 340,000 people.[2] Translated as sầm, sum, xờm in Vietnamese; jam, eum in Korean, Sham, or Sum in other Chinese dialects.[3] Sometimes misspelled as Shen, Qin, Chen or Sun.

Cen surname originated during the Zhou dynasty, at the beginning. The nephew of Zhou Wen Wang, Cen Zi, was the first to wear the Cen surname because he controlled the Cen Ting in Shanxi province and had the title of Zi Jue, feodal prince. In honor of him, his children changed their name in Cen.
