Caves of Glass (also known simply as COG) were a collaborative post-metal band. The band released their first and only album, Caves of Glass, in 2013 through Just Noise Music and Little League Records.[1][2] The members have since carried on to make music in several projects including Amanita, Qualia, Lethargy and Eyes Make Pictures.

Influences

Caves of Glass have attributed a wide range of musical and artistic influences to the stylistic direction of their music. The band have cited influence from black metal/post-metal bands Isis, Deafheaven, Neurosis and Cloudkicker, as major influences, as well as post-rock bands Mono, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky and 65daysofstatic. The band has also cited influence from additional artists such as Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Underoath and El Ten Eleven. Regarding conceptual influence, the band has noted that when composing tracks, they would often envision a specific environment that would illustrate the way their music sounded (i.e. the track "Mariana" is ocean-themed, and therefore uses softer guitar sounds, brushier drums and sonar/aquatic sound effects, while "Gone from Oceania" is directly inspired by a dystopian setting, particularly George Orwell's novel, 1984).

Caves of Glass received mixed reviews from Critics. Artrocker's Sam Willis described the album as "bringing swathes of Sigur Rós-esc, beautifully ambient melodies which pull at the heartstrings and would no doubt be moving to witness live", while also noting, "Now, I’m not sure that the 8-12 minute songs that Caves of Glass offer are really my cup of tea, however, it is plain to see that this band are masters of their craft and that although the tracks, to me, can at times become dragging, they are clearly meticulously, yet seemingly randomly, configured – and at times extremely impressive".

Dan Swinhow, London-based journalist, contrasted the previous review by noting, "Caves Of Glass walk the fine line between entertainment and indulgent beard stroking – sometimes crushing with sonic excess, but often meandering in a dream state" and "Opener ‘The Hollow’ is probably the highlight, but at nine minutes it takes up almost a quarter of the album. Clean guitars and hazy atmospherics make way for sizeable riffs and fuzzed vocal effects. Huge stadium chords break through, dragging a big squealing solo with it, before all returns to quiet. It’s a grand opening statement, but unfortunately the rest of the record doesn’t quite stand up to its promise." [5]
