    Catch is the debut single by Canadian singer-songwriter Allie X, off of her debut studio record, CollXtion I released initially on February 3, 2014, with a GIF designed in coordination with Logan White and Krissie Torgerson.[6] On January 21, 2015 music video was released.[7] It is the first single under the name of Allie X.[8]

    Recording and Composition

    Production took nearly two years to complete, going through several massive changes in tempo, key, and genre. Approximately 20 versions of the song exist, the first of which is a R&B track. The song has been described as detailing a macabre doctor-patient relationship. She has also stated the song deals with her not wanting to submit to all of the addictions associated with fame.[9][10][6]


    Critical Response

    Upon the release of Catch, Jamie Milton of DIY magazine says, of Allie X and her single, "Allie X stepped on the scene like a bottle of wine at a wedding - everyone wanted a piece of her."[11] TIME's Jasmine Cox complemented the track, saying it "shines with a level of polish and craft that’s remarkable," and complemented X's "attention to detail."[12] Logan White of Billboard magazine called Catch "an expertly crafted, remarkably vulnerable synth-pop showcase."[1] Carl Williot from Idolator said that Catch was "everything that’s wonderful about under-the-radar pop music right now: immaculate hooks, pristine synth work, vocal versatility, bold atmospherics and a beating, bursting heart," and named it "the best song of 2014."[3][10]

    Depicted above is the GIF originally released alongside Catch, that has attained a level of notoriety.

    The music video was released on January 21, 2015 and was directed by Jérémie Saindon, with Shayne Laverdière serving as director of photography, and Louisa Schabas as the art director. It was edited by Sébastien Delporte, styled by Melissa Matos, and make up was done by Leslie-Ann Thomson. Production was done by Antler and VFX by SHED.[13] ( Page will play audio when loaded)

    Concept

    The Music Video for Catch continues with a GIF like cinematography and jittering frames. The video depicts several things, beginning with Allie X seen standing on a platform with a spinning piano, wearing glasses with pink flowers in place of lenses, eventually moving on to show her simultaneously lying on a sofa and the floor, with an eyeball filling her open mouth. Next is a room filled with mirrors, and a leg-less mannequin, with a cloaked figure stands upon a chair while magically enlarging a black pyramid. Now back in the piano room, she lies in between in a pile of naked mannequins, appearing to be nude herself. then she is seen mildly convulsing on the floor of an empty pool. A female mannequin is seen spinning in circles, with a sheer fabric fastened at it's neck, extending all the way up a pointed hat and back down to the middle of it's back. It is next seen strangling itself. The following few scenes depict her as: nude, with open anatomy with plastic organs, and with a missing torso which has been replaced with a rotating circle with an X in the middle of it. The aforementioned cloaked figure now flashes between nude and cloaked, and then another nude mannequin, with a black mask covering its entire face, is seen sprawled out across different locations in the empty pool basin. Allie is seen levitating above the pool with large needles skewered throughout her body. The mannequin with the sheer hat is seen again but now vomiting. A figure with a red cloak with a mirror for a face, is seen peering outside. The mannequin in the pool basin has been cut into sections which have been strewn about. The video ends with her lying on the pool floor and a monarch butterfly's chrysalis is seen hatching from her mouth and flying away.

    Promotion

    The song was performed live for the first time in a stripped down acoustic version for Nylon Magazine.[14]
