Castro is a Romance (Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Galician, and Filipino) word originally derived from Latin "Castrum", a pre-Roman military camp or fortification (cf: Greek: kastron; Proto-Celtic: *Kassrik; Breton: kaer, *kastro). The English-language equivalent is Chester.
