Carter Gray[4] (born August 26, 1986), is an American professional wrestler who has worked for such independent wrestling promotions as Combat Zone Wrestling,[4] Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South Independent Wrestling Association East Coast and Price of Glory Wrestling.[4]
Career
In August, 2001, Gray, under the ring name Jayson Quick, along with his friends, Dillon Harrison (also known by the ring name A.C. Suede), Dominick Butcher (also known by the ring names Terry Stevens, Alex Trent) and John Hoskins (also known by his ring name Cheesy John) began training at Michigan Sports Camps under the direction of Dan Severn and guidance of fellow independent wrestler and head trainer Jack Thriller. Shortly thereafter, Quick made his professional debut for the Universal Wrestling Alliance among the likes of Jimmy Jacobs, Chris Sabin and Monty Brown.
From 2002 to 2005, Quick wrestled all over the state of Michigan for such promotions as the All World Wrestling League, which was carried on a local television station out of Lansing, Blue Water Championship Wrestling, Independent Wrestling Revolution and Price of Glory Wrestling from its inception in 2004.[2] During his stint with Price of Glory, Quick managed to capture the tag team championship with a returning Terry Stevens, collectively known as the High Risk Society. Although the championship run proved to be brief due to Stevens' personal struggles. Quick rebounded successfully and won the companies' annual tournament entitled, "Glorified" over other competitors CJ Otis, Jimmy Jacobs, N8 Mattison, Jack Thriller, Josh Abercrombie, BAM and Rastakhan. Following the results of the tournament, Gray took a brief hiatus from the wrestling spotlight and relocated to Avon, Indiana, a suburb outside of Indianapolis, to pursue better occupational opportunities as well as have better exposure. There Quick reaffirmed his values and began implementing a strict workout regimen in preparation for his return to the ring. He began studying nutrition and personal training and even obtained a position as a high school wrestling coach. Keeping in contact with friends CJ Otis and Josh Abercrombie, Quick learned of Ian Rotten's promotion IWA Mid-South running out of Plainfield, Indiana, the town in which he coached. Stemming from talks with CJ Otis, Quick attended such 2007 shows as IWA King of The Deathmatch, and Ian Rotten's farewell, where Rotten promised the fans in Plainfield that he, and the rest of IWA Mid-South would showcase young and new talent come 2008, a statement that became motivation enough for Quick to make his return.[5]
Independent Wrestling Association Mid South
Eager to follow through on his goal of wrestling for IWA Mid-South, Gray returned to Price of Glory Wrestling on January 6, 2008 thirteen pounds heavier than his last appearance. He wrestled only five matches with the promotion before making his IWA: Mid South singles debut in a loss against Egotistico Fantastico (The night prior to this match, Quick made his official debut in a six-man tag team match with Christin Able and Sami Callihan versus Billy Roc, Sabian, and Jimmy Olsen). Soon after his debut, Quick won an invitation to the annual Ted Petty Invitational tournament by winning a five was scramble match against current world Heavyweight champion Dingo, Cheech and Cloudy, and Brodie Lee immediately following a ten-man tag team match against the Naptown Dragons, Drake Younger Troy Walters, and Jaysin Strife. However, Quick would not stop there. He soon set his sights on then World Light Heavyweight champion, Jason Hades. In their first meeting, the two battled to a twenty minute time limit draw with a five minute overtime that saw no winner. IWA Mid-South owner, Ian Rotten saw it fit to schedule a rematch at Kings of the Crimson Mask, August 2, 2008.[6] However, this time, the two would meet in a TLC match. Leading up to that day the two were paired up on a team involved in a six man tag-team match that resulted in Quick turning on Hades, costing their team the match.[6] August 2, 2008, Quick and Hades would finally meet for the TLC match. However, as Quick entered it was apparent that he had acquired the services of Kimberly Kash, heelish valet and owner of Kash incorporated. After several attempts of getting involved, Hades was able to neutralize Kash and come away with a win.[6] Disgusted with his loss, when offered a handshake, Quick refused, discarding Hades handshake and exiting the ring. Ian Rotten quickly took the microphone and offered Quick a rematch, this time inside of a steel cage. Quick happily accepted.[6][7] Weeks later, Quick began badgering Hades, showing up to events he was not scheduled on, simply to attack Hades. Even going as far as duct taping a plastic bag over his head,[6] and tying a noose around his neck and hanging him over the top rope. Hades had had enough. He begged and pleaded with Ian Rotten to pull the two out of the Ted Petty Invitational to settle the score once and for all.[6] Hesitating, Ian agreed. Although, adding two stipulations. The match would now be an "I Quit" match inside of a steel cage and The loser would lose the name Ja(y)son forever.[6]
September 27, 2008, with the assistance of Kimberly Kash providing weapons through the door of the cage, both Hades and Quick fought to the point of bloodshed.[6] Quick eventually called for a screwdriver from Kash which would prove to be unwise, as it ended up in the hands of Hades. Hades then drove the screwdriver into the eye of Quick until Quick screamed, "I Quit."[6] Quick did not re-emerge until January 17, 2009, as he was now being called "Quick" Carter Gray. He defeated Ricochet to become #1 contender for the IWA Mid-South Light Heavyweight Championship, and then went on later that night to finally become victorious and obtain the IWA Mid-South Light Heavyweight Championship against Dingo, who was holding both the light heavyweight title as well as the Heavyweight title at the time.[8]
Combat Zone Wrestling
In December 2008, Gray made his CZW debut at Cage of Death X in a Ladder Match at the ECW Arena against Ryan McBride, Pinkie Sanchez, fellow newcomer Egotistico Fantastico, and Dan Paysan. Although McBride was victorious, both Quick and Ego did much to impress and were brought back to compete in singles' competition against one another.
