Carl Thackery
Carl Thackery (born 14 October 1962 in Sheffield/UK) was a British long-distance runner in the 1980s and 1990s.
He ran twice for Great Britain in the World Half-Marathon Championships, finishing 16th and winning team silver in 1992 and winning individual and team bronzes in 1993.[1] He also finished 14th in the European Championships 10,000 metres in 1986, won team silver at the World Cross Country Championships in 1987 (where he finished 20th),[2] and won team silver at the IAAF World Challenge Road relay in 1986, helping to set a UK record for the road marathon relay in the process.[3][4] At a domestic level, he was the English AAA 10,000 metres champion in 1991 [5] and the English Inter-Counties Cross Country champion in 1987.[6]
Thackery won a number of prestigious international road races, including the City-Pier-City Half Marathon in The Hague,[7] the Rome-Ostia Half Marathon (twice),[8] the 15 km Seven Hills Race (Zevenheuvelenloop) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands,[9] the Cherry Blossom 10 Miles in Washington DC,[10] the Trevira Twosome 10 miles in New York Central Park,[11] the Jean Bouin Memorial in Barcelona (twice),[12] and La Matesina 10 km in Bojano/Italy.[13] In the UK, he won the Nike Blaydon race in 1998[14] and ran world-class sub-46.40 min times when winning the Brampton-Carlisle and Erewash 10 miles in 1991 and 1992 respectively.[15] Thackery also won two Grand Prix track races in 1987 - the 10,000 metres at the Paris BNP meeting[16] and the one-hour event at the Herculis meeting in Monaco.[17] His half-marathon personal best of 61 min 04 sec ranked him first in the world in 1987.[18] Thackery set the British and Commonwealth records for 20,000 metres and one hour on the track at La Flèche in France in 1990.[19][20]
