Capital punishment in Lebanon

Capital punishment is legal in Lebanon, Lebanon continues to execute criminals most recently in 2004. Capital crimes in Lebanon include murder, espionage, treason, terrorism, and collaborating with Israeli forces. The methods prescribed by law are hanging and firing squad. Hanging is used for those convicted of murder or terrorism. Firing squad is used for political crimes such as treason. In 2004, Lebanon executed 3 murderers by hanging. There are currently more than 200 people awaiting their execution, 50 of them for spying for Israel. President Michel Suleiman is expected to sign many of these execution orders. The President has the sole authority to pardon an inmate and all execution orders must be ratified by him.
