Canterbury Greyhounds

Canterbury Greyhounds[1] were based at Kingsmead Stadium situated in Kingsmead, Canterbury.

The site was built on top of a rubbish dump site and opened for football on 30 August 1958 and was also used as an athletics track.

Canterbury raced under National Greyhound Racing Club rules from 28 August 1987 after previously being an independent racing track.

During its short licensed history the track was rewarded with a lucrative Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service (BAGS) contract and one of their trainers, John McGee won the English Greyhound Derby with Hit The Lid in 1988.

Canterbury closed its doors on 30 October 1999 when the council refused the lease before being re-developed for residential housing.
