The Campionato Nazionale Primavera – Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti, is an Italian football competition played by the youth teams of all the Serie A and all the Serie B clubs, and is organized by the Football League. All players must be under 20, but two overaged are allowed in eliminatory rounds. The first edition was held in the 1962–63 season but at that time there were two champions because Serie A and Serie B teams played in two different tournaments. Since the 1969–70 season they were unified. On December 16, 2006 it was named in memory of former Internazionale captain and chairman Giacinto Facchetti. It literally translates to "Spring" National Championship, relating the opening season of the year with the young age of the players.
Due to sponsorship reasons, the league is officially called Campionato Primavera Tim – Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti, as Telecom Italia Mobile has sponsored the Coppa Italia, Serie A, Serie B, Campionato Nazionale Primavera and Coppa Italia Primavera.
Format
The 42 teams are, initially, divided into 3 groups of 14 teams each: in regular season, teams play in a true robin-round format that qualifies six teams (two for group). The latest slots (two) are awarded after a play-off series, in which eight teams are involved: the final stage (also «Final Eight»), held on a neutral venue, is based on knockout format. The winners are eligible for Supercoppa Primavera, against Coppa Italia Primavera winners: if the same club wins both competitions, the runners-up of Coppa Italia are admitted in Supercoppa.
Players in Primavera League must be under 18 on 1 January of the year that season started, with limited number of overage player. (In the past, 19, For example, in 2009–10 season, players be must born on or after 1 January 1990, while the overage players must be born on or after 1 January 1989.[1]) Since 2012–13 season the age limited had lowered from 19[2] to 18.
