Camel Up is a board game designed by Steffen Bogen and illustrated by Dennis Lohausen, published in 2014 by Pegasus Spiele. Players of the game have to place bets on a camel race taking place in the desert and the player who earns the most money through betting at the end of the game is the winner. In 2014, Camel Up won the Spiel des Jahres, a prestigious industry award for best board game of the year.
Gameplay
The camel race takes place on the game board around 16 spaces at the base of a cardboard pyramid and this race is divided into various legs. Players do not actually own any of the camels who are involved in the race but instead receive cards that are representative of a character who is betting on the race. Each turn a player may take one of four actions:
- Move a camel: To move a camel, a pyramid token is taken, as is the pyramid itself from the centre of the race board. The 5 different coloured dice are rolled and one is selected via the pyramid. The colour of the dice selected indicates the colour of the camel to be moved and the number (1,2 or 3) indicates how many spaces it will move.
- Take betting token: Take a betting token of the camel that the player thinks is going to win the current leg. There are three for each camel; the top token for each camel pays out a greater amount than the one below it.
- Place oasis/desert tile: Placing an oasis/desert tile on a player's turn will give the player a money bonus if a camel lands on it during that leg. If it is oasis side up, the camel will get a burst of speed and will move an extra space forward. If the desert side is up, the camel will move back a space. Both the leg betting tokens and the oasis/desert tiles are returned to the board/owner at the end of each leg.
- Predict winner/loser of the race: A player can also place one of their character cards face-down in the race winner or loser’s enclosures. At the end of the game, the player who correctly backs the winning camel gets money, the earlier a player correctly predicted the winner the more money they receive. This works in the same way for the camel who ends up in last place.
