Callum Morris (born 3 February 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays for Scottish club Dundee United, as a central defender.

Career

Morris started his career as a youth player with Premier League side Newcastle United.[1][2] He was given a twelve month extension to his scholarship in 2008.[3] While with Newcastle United reserves, Morris, along with Darren Lough, was described by coach Adam Sadler as "the next big thing".[4] Following Newcastle's relegation, Chronicle Live reported that Morris is believed to be one of the youngsters to play next season.[5]

It wasn't until 2010 when Morris was released by the club, having never featured in the first team.[6][7] Following his release, Morris then went on trial with Gateshead,[8] but left after failing to impress during that time.[9]

After an unsuccessful trial at Gateshead, Morris joined Blyth Spartans on 13 August 2010[10][11] After making five appearance for the club, Morris left the club to join the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain.[12][13]

While at the Glenn Hoddle Academy, Morris soon featured for the Spanish Fourth Division side for Jerez Industrial CF, where he gained full-time, senior football experience.[1] In November 2011, Morris joined Hayes & Yeading United.[14] After making two appearance for the club, Morris was released by the club.[15]

Dunfermline Athletic

After more than six-month without a club, Morris signed for Dunfermline Athletic on 31 August 2012.[16] He later cited Dunfermline had save his football career after considering giving up his dream.[17] Morris made his debut for the club, in the Fife derby, in a 3–1 win against Raith Rovers, where he made his first start and played 90 minutes. Since his debut, Morris continued to be in the first team at the club. On 8 December 2012, Morris received a straight red card after a foul on Stefan Scougall, in a 2–1 loss against Livingston.[18] On his return on 29 December 2012, Morris scored his first goal, in a 4–2 loss against Morton.[19] His second goal was also against Morton as well on 23 February 2013, where Dunfermline Athletic lost 4–1.[20]

However, the season was marked with financial problems, which led to the club entering administration. Morris wrote on Twitter over his frustrations of his wages delay.[21] It went worse when the club relegated to Scottish Division Two following a loss in the play-off, where Morris was absent for the four matches, due to a hamstring problem.[22] Despite the relegation, Morris was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in the First Division, representing Dunfermline Athletic.[23] Morris was also named the club’s player of the season.[24]

In his second season at Dunfermline Athletic, Morris rejected rumors that he left the club by appearing in the opening friendly against Hearts.[25] In his first appearance of the season, Morris scored the club's first goal in the Division One, as the club lost 3–2 against Arbroath.[26] As the season progress, Morris continued to be the regular in the first team until in mid-December when he suffered an Achilles tendon problem.[27] As a result making a return in the first team,[28] Morris was then offered a new contract with the club.[24][29] Morris, however, turned down a new contract with the club, which lead to attract interests from Dundee United.[30][31]

Despite this, Morris helped the club finished second, which they qualified for the Championship play-offs and helped them to win against Stranraer on aggregate.[32] Unfortunately, Dunfermline Athletic would remain in League One after losing in the Championship Play-offs final to Cowdenbeath 4–1 on aggregate, which Morris made his final appearance for the club.[33]

Dundee United

Morris signed a 2 year contract with Dundee United on 17 June 2014.[34] He made his debut on 10 August 2014, as Dundee United beat Aberdeen 3–0 in the opening game of the season.[35] His first goal for the club came on 21 September 2014, as Dundee United won 4–1 against city rivals Dundee in the Dundee derby.[36]
