C. G. P. Grey is an eponymous YouTube channel featuring short explanatory videos. The channel's first popular video was an explanation of the terminology of the British Isles, which went viral.[1]

The channel has also spawned several spin-offs, including a secondary channel, CGPGrey2, and a channel with playlists of Grey's favourite videos called "greysfavs". In addition, Grey created the podcast Hello Internet with Brady Haran, creator of many well known educational YouTube channels.

Videos

The channel provides, among other things, Grey Explains, a series of explanatory videos[2][3] on a range of subjects, including politics, geography, economics, and British culture. The videos feature Grey narrating over animations and still photographs. The backing music is usually credited to Kevin MacLeod. While nearly all of Grey's videos feature his voice, his face has never been shown in his videos, and always has his face obscured when appearing in other people's videos;[4] he often uses a stick figure with glasses to represent himself.[5] His videos also often include hidden links,[6] often leading to Monty Python videos.[7] Many of his videos feature pop culture references such as items from the video game Minecraft and Bitcoin logos shown as analogous to money.

Grey uses Final Cut Pro X to edit and add animations to his videos and records his voice over the music playing in the background on Logic Pro X.[8] Videos are released on the channel significantly less frequently than other YouTubers; Grey has said that this is due to careful rigor, with the majority of videos never being finished.[9] His video debunking popular misconceptions has been featured on CBS.[10] Two videos differentiate London, England and the City of London, while explaining certain oddities that arise from the ancient customs of the latter.[11][12] Another two videos explaining copyright law and The Electoral College have been featured on Mashable.[2] The channel has also explained the economic disadvantages of U.S. one-cent coins, in another viral video, Death to Pennies.[13][14] The video How to Become Pope also went viral.[15][16]

Several videos, under the collective name "Politics in the Animal Kingdom", explain some differences between various election procedures, and are critical of first-past-the-post voting (gerrymandering, minority rule, lack of Condorcet winner, two-party system, spoiler effect) and discussing the relative advantages of the alternative vote, mixed-member proportional representation and the single transferable vote.

Grey's videos have been described as explanatory and sobering, especially Humans Need Not Apply, a video not included in his Grey Explains series.[17]

Hello Internet is a regular discussion podcast hosted by CGP Grey and Brady Haran, peaking as the #1 iTunes podcast in United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Canada, and Australia[37] and was selected as one of Apple's best new podcasts of 2014.[38]

The podcast features discussions pertaining to their lives as professional content creators for YouTube as well as their personal annoyances and interests. Normal topics include new Apple products, technology etiquette, workplace efficiency, and the differences between Grey's and Haran's personal mannerisms. It is also published on a dedicated website, and a YouTube channel approximately one "season" behind the website releases.[39] A "season" contains ten episodes. The podcast does not have a strict schedule for release, but is usually released on every other Monday. The show began with a trial run of 10 episodes before Grey and Brady decided to extend the series for another season. On February 16, 2015, the podcast began its fourth season.
