Button Gwinnett was an indie pop band formed in Lafayette, Louisiana in the late 1980s. Lead singer Ryan Matterly, who was from the U.K. but lived in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Lafayette, named the band after Button Gwinnett, a British-born signer of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia who was killed in a duel.[1] The band also included Louisiana natives Vincent Aubachon (guitarist) and Jimmy Dobbs (drums), and London native Mark Mason (keyboards). Button Gwinnett was notable for its twee pop sound "with a dash of Southern rock."[2]
Their album "Ungrateful to These Teachers" was released in 1989 on the independent label Impartial Records. The album reached number 11 on the British indie albums chart. The album's sole single, "Streams," was co-produced by Dave Scott of the Scottish indie pop band Motorcycle Boy.
The band toured in the U.S. and U.K. in 1988, and again in the U.K. in 1989 where they opened for The Wedding Present and where the group's melodic sound was favorably received.[2]
