Butterz is an independent record label based in London that specializes in grime music. It was founded by DJs and music producers Elijah & Skilliam[1] in 2010, but now is also partly owned by Terror Danjah, Swindle, Royal-T and Dane Bradshaw.[2] The label helped bring instrumental grime to the forefront of the electronic music scene,[3] and was ranked 10th in FACT Magazine's 10 best labels of 2011.[4]
History
Founding
Butterz began as a blog in 2007, run by label founders Elijah & Skilliam. The blog consisted of downloads, interviews and features with grime musicians.[6]
The associated label was formed in March 2010 and has since released grime music both digitally and on vinyl, from artists including Terror Danjah, D.O.K, Royal T, Swindle, Champion, P Money and Trim.[7] In 2010 it was announced that the blog was ending to focus solely on the running of the label.[6] In 2012 grime artists Terror Danjah, Swindle, and Royal-T joined as partial owners of the label, as well as Dane Bradshaw.[2]
The label is famed for bringing instrumental grime to the forefront of the electronic music landscape for the first time. Butterz was ranked 10th in FACT Magazine's 10 best labels of 2011.[4] David Kelly has designed all of the label's artwork, which is always in two colours: black and yellow.
Radio Show
Elijah and Skilliam have had a regular show on Rinse FM since 2008.[8] It airs every Sunday 7-9pm GMT, and since the spring of 2013 it features a rotation of DJs Royal-T and Swindle alongside the original duo. In 2011, Elijah and Skilliam released Rinse: 17, a mixed compilation album featuring material from the radio show and the label.[9] Past shows are archived on Soundcloud.
Events
Butterz events take place in various nightclubs with label artists alongside guests. They have featured appearances from JME, Skepta, Kode 9, DJ EZ, Joker and P Money.[5] They are often streamed live online and selected DJ sets are shared via the label's website.[10] In March 2013 they began an offshoot club night and online boutique: Jamz.[11]
