Bury Interchange is a transport hub in Bury, Greater Manchester, England. It was opened in March 1980, integrating a new bus station with the northern terminus of the Bury-to-Manchester heavy railway line; the line was converted to light rail in the early 1990s and was inaugurated as Metrolink's Bury Line in April 1992.
History
The railway originally served Bury Bolton Street which is now the Bury railway station of the East Lancashire Railway. The railway between Manchester and Bury Interchange was redeveloped in the early 1990s to become part of the Manchester Metrolink network, forming the northern terminus. The interchange is managed by TfGM and has recently been refurbished, improving facilities and security for passengers.[1]
In 1994, pensioner Shirley Leach was murdered at the interchange on her way home from visiting her sick daughter in hospital. Despite the case going cold, DNA evidence finally convicted her killer in 2006.[2]
Metrolink services
Bury Interchange is located on the Bury Line with trams towards Market Street in Manchester departing every 6 minutes during the day, Mondays to Saturdays, every 12 minutes Monday to Saturday evenings and Sunday daytime and every 15 minutes Sunday evenings. Trams also head towards Ashton-under-Lyne and Altrincham, with the Monday to Saturday daytime service running every 12 minutes each to Ashton-under-Lyne via Manchester Piccadilly or Altrincham, while evening and Sundays journeys run to Ashton-under-Lyne only, with journeys to Altrincham requiring a change of trams at Piccadilly Gardens.[3]
Bus services
The majority of services are run by First Greater Manchester and Rossendalebus with the remainder of services run by Arriva North West, Stagecoach Manchester, Stotts, Cumfybus and Transdev Burnley and Pendle. Now-defunct operators which have run services to or from the Interchange in the past have included Ribble Motor Services, Crosville Motor Services, Yelloway Motor Services, The Bee Line Buzz Company, Burnley & Pendle, Bolton Coachways, Mayne & Son, Citibus, Shearings (later Timeline), Blue Bus (Horwich), Maytree Travel and JP Travel.
There are frequent buses running to Manchester, Rochdale, Bolton, Middleton and Rawtenstall plus several parts of the Bury area including Heywood, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom and Tottington. Buses also run from Bury to Accrington, Bacup and Burnley.
