Burke Reid
Burke Reid is an Australian–Canadian record producer/musician who is based in Australia and Canada.
Career
After migrating from Canada to Australia in 1994 at the age of 14 years,[1] Reid became one third of the band Gerling in 1997. Following the announcement of a hiatus by Gerling in 2007, Reid continued in the music industry as a record producer and joined the production/engineering team at Big Jesus Burger Studios (BJB Studios) in Surry Hills, Sydney, Australia.[2]
The first album that Reid provided production services for, The Mess Hall's Devils Elbow, won the Australian Music Prize (AMP). He was subsequently involved with numerous AMP-nominated albums, such as The Drones' Havilah and Dan Kelly's Dream.[1]
During mid-2013, Reid undertook production duties for the recording of Eskimo Joe's sixth album The Wasteland, after the band set the Australian record for a crowd-funded album (as of February 2013), raising A$60,736.[3] In an October 2013 interview with the Australasian branch of the Roland musical instrument company, Eskimo Joe member Joel Quartermain responded to a question about the recording experience in the following manner: "He'd kind of leave a lot of imperfections in while we were tracking, so that was something that we weren't used to. We, just, like, do something until we nail it—he'd get three takes and go, "Well, okay, we'll fix that up later" ... or whatever, or not. So that was kind of ... interesting."[4]
Following around one year of writing, the Brisbane band DZ Deathrays entered the Grove Studios complex with Reid in January 2014 to record their second album, Black Rat.[5][6] Grove Studios is located adjacent to the Strickland Forest, north of Sydney, Australia,[7] and the band recorded with Reid for a two-week period—a 9 January Facebook post from the band read: "Producer Burke Reid tinkering away at about 3am. Sounding brutal."[8] The band's press release for the album, to be released on 2 May 2014, states that the recording is "a rich, deep collection of sounds, textures and arrangements".[9]
