Former Assistant Secretary C. David Welch

The Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs is an agency of the Department of State within the United States government that deals with U.S. foreign policy and diplomatic relations with the nations of the Near East.

Duties

The Bureau handles U.S. foreign policy and diplomatic relations with the countries and geographic entities of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.^[1]

Leadership

It is headed by the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, a position previously filled by C. David Welch who resigned from the post in December 2008. Anne W. Patterson currently holds this position.
