Bugo
Cristian Bugatti, also known as Bugo (born 1973, Trecate, Italy) is an Italian singer-songwriter, artist and actor. He did not attend any school of art, growing as a self-taught artist. He spent his youth in the country rice fields of Trecate (Piedmont). In 2000, he moved to the city of Milan, where he lived for 10 years. In 2010, he moved to New Delhi.
Work
In 1992, he left for military service during which he learned to play the guitar and wrote his first songs. In 2000 he moved to Milan. His first three albums are with independent labels: Pane, pene, pan, La prima gratta and "Sentimento westernato . In 2002, Bugo signed with Universal Music Group and was elected "Artist of the Year".
According to AllMusic, Bugo is one of the most interesting and controversial artists to emerge from the Italian independent scene in the 1990s. He is loved by his fans and critics, but equally despised and judged as just a comedy act by others. With a unique mixture between international sounds and Italian lyrics, in the 2000s Bugo become the "cantautore" (Italian for singer-songwriter) who shifted the political songs of 1970s to disillusioned songwriting of the 2000s, the pioneer of the new Italian singer-songwriter scene with his hallucinated and emotional rhymes. Someone has conied a neologism for him: "fantautore".[1]
In October 2002, he released his first album with Universal, titled Dal lofai al cisei. The first single is "Casalingo" ("Household"), followed by "Io mi rompo i coglioni" ("I break my balls"). These two songs are among the most popular songs of Bugo. In April 2004 he released the double album Golia & Melchiorre. The album was divided in two parts: one is more nonsense electric experimental music and the other collects songs more intimate and acoustic. The album cover (Bugo held by the hair his decapitated head, like a modern Caravaggio) is censored by the record company which decides to apply on the face of Bugo a sticker depicting a picnic basket.[2] Also the video of the lead single, "Carla è Franca", was censored by the music TV channels.[3] The third album for Universal, titled Sguardo contemporaneo, came out in April 2006. The single "Amore mio infinito" will be released in a duet with the actress Violante Placido.
In 2008, an album titled Contatti has released for Universal. The album is driven primarily by the first single "C'è crisi ("There is a crisis"), which comes into heavy rotation on major national radio. The album will bring Bugo to be considered in a mainstream consideration. In August 2008 the producer/DJ Steve Aoki included "La mano mia" (The Bloody Beetroots remix) on a Radio 1 compilation mix for BBC radio.[4] An unofficial video for the song "Felicità" ("Happiness") is directed by Federico Vitetta and Ty Evans (with the production of Spike Jonze). He performs on the main stage of the edition of Italia Wave of 2009, dedicated to the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock. Bugo performs a re-interpretation of Jimi Hendrix in Fire.[5] "Prisencolinensinainciusol" by Adriano Celentano will be played by Bugo throughout the tour.[6]
In 2008, Bugo started his occupation with visual arts, with an eclecticism which is also found in his music. In 2010, he held his first exhibition in Rome, in which Bugo exposes 67 people around the perimeter of the gallery. In this occasion, Art International Radio, an online internet radio station based in New York City, did an interview with him.[7]
In 2011, he wrote the original soundtrack for the movie "Missione di pace" ("Mission of peace"), in which he also acts as an actor, participating at the world premiere in the 2011 edition of Venice Film Festival.[8] In 2011, Bugo released a new album for Universal titled Nuovi rimedi per la miopia (New remedies for myopia). In July 2012, the British newspaper, The Guardian, published an article on the current Italian music in Europe, including Bugo, Jovanotti, and Vasco Rossi[9]
In 2012, Bugo participated at MiArt, the international art fair in Milan, exposing three photographs of children with beard[10] and held his second solo exhibition at Room Gallery, showing a huge photographic installation of the overturned internal of the exhibition space.[11]
In 2013, before touring acoustic in Italy, he played "Comunque io voglio te" ("However i want you") for BalconyTV in New Delhi, an online music show that features music acts on balconies around the world.[12] In September 2013 the director Andrea Caccia, who filmed concerts and private life of Bugo for 13 consecutive years since 2001, announces that he is working to complete a film about Bugo's music titled "Ora Respiro" ("Now I breathe").[13][14]
As part of a public art serie in the street of Ghaziabad (India) in 2013, he created a billboard showing a surreal phrase from newspaper clippings, emerging from a vibrant red background.[15] More artworks with newspaper clippings were included in the fourth issue of Le Dictatuer, a magazine with twenty series of commissioned works by international artists, presented at Palais de Tokyo in Paris.[16] In 2013, Bugo held his third solo exhibition at Wilson Project Space in Sassari, exposing a large self-portrait. A second self-portrait will be exposed for "Art4shop" in September 2013 and a third self-portrait in the streets of New Delhi, during the days of India Art Fair.[17]
