Buffalo Bill's Brewery is a restaurant and brewery in Hayward, California. It was one of the first brewpubs to open up in California after 1982 legislation permitting breweries to begin selling on the premises. The brewery was founded in 1983 by Bill Owens, a Guggenheim Fellowship photographer.[1] Its first beer offered on a continual basis outside the brewery is their Alimony Ale, an India Pale Ale. In 1987, Alimony Ale was named the "Bitterest Beer in America" by Playboy.[2] The brewery contracts with larger breweries for outside distribution. The brewery is planning to open a microdistillery in downtown Hayward in 2013, and if state law is changed, the spirits will be sold on site.[3]
