The Brussels Philharmonic, formerly known as BRT Philharmonic Orchestra and then as Flemish Radio Orchestra, is a Belgian philharmonic orchestra located in Brussels. It was linked to the Dutch language public broadcaster NIR/INR (the present VRT) and is now an established body in the country's Flemish Community.[1]
History
The orchestra was founded in 1935 as a studio ensemble of public broadcasting with the name of Groot Symfonie-Orkest.[2] In 1998, it began its independent existence as the VRT Radio Orkest (Flemish Radio Orchestra). From 2008 onwards, its new name "Brussels Philharmonic – the orchestra of Flanders" has highlighted its close tie to its home city, Brussels.[3]
The repertoire consists mainly of the great symphonic pieces, but the Philharmonic aims to play other music genres and collaborate with other disciplines. Also, the orchestra plays contemporary classical music and movie soundtracks, including soundtracks to films directed by Martin Scorsese.[4] It is most famous for the recording of the scores of award-winning movies The Aviator, composed by Howard Shore, and The Artist,[5][6] composed by Ludovic Bource.[7]
Concert halls
Since 2005, the residence of the orchestra is Studio 4 of the renovated Flagey building in Brussels.[8] The orchestra performs its own concerts in Flagey, but also couples to concert cycles in the BOZAR, Centre for Fine Arts.[9] The orchestra also plays in the rest of Flanders, e.g. in Bruges, Gent, Leuven, Hasselt. Concert are often recorded by radio channel Klara.[10]
Since 2000 the orchestra is the official partner of the Film Fest Ghent.[11]
The Brussels Philharmonic performs regularly in the capitals of Europe. It is the orchestra in residence at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, and there are annual concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at Cadogan Hall[12][13] in London. It has partnered with the Festival Musica in Strasbourg[14] and the Festival de Besançon. The orchestra also tours central Europe, including on-stage appearances in Salzburg, Vienna and Berlin.[1]
