Brough Family Organization

The Brough Family Organization is a non-profit ancestral family organization and surname association that researches and publishes information on the ancestors and descendants of the Broughs of the British Isles.

Founding

Established in 1918 the Brough Family Organization includes all descendants of Thomas and Samuel Brough, two early Utah pioneers. Thomas' son Samuel served as president of the organization over its first twenty years, before being replaced by William T. Rex and a change in policy where presidents would serve only for one year at a time.^[1] It began holding the "Brough family genealogical annual meeting" upon its conception, intending to serve as family reunions and as a general meeting for the organization.^[2]

Non-profit incorporation

The Brough Family Organization was officially incorporated in 1979 in Utah as the Richard Brough Family Organization (RBFO),^[3] named for Richard Brough (1786-1873) who served for 17 years in the British army and was the first person in England with a "Brough" surname to become a Latter Day Saint (in 1840). Richard Brough was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) on June 20, 1840 at Frooms Hill, Herefordshire, England, by Thomas Clark. He was later ordained a Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood of the LDS Church on September 28, 1840, at Hanley, Staffordshire, England, by Wilford Woodruff and George Simpson.^[4] The Library of Congress says that the family traces its roots back to 1190 in the region of Staffordshire, England.^[5]

Today the Brough Family Organization (BFO) operates under the direction and support of the RBFO--an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charitable organization and a Utah non-profit corporation.^[6] According to its non-profit incorporation, the organization exists to “engage in genealogical and historical research throughout the world in behalf of the ancestors, descendants and relatives of the Broughs of the British Isles--with specific emphasis on the ancestors, descendants and relatives of Richard Brough [1786-1873] and Mary Horleston of Staffordshire, England.”^[7]

Publications

Since 1980, the Brough Family Organization has published fourteen books containing extensive genealogical data and historical information on the ancestors and descendants of the Broughs of the British Isles.^[8] The organization also creates video documentaries based on its historical research.^[9] It has been mentioned in the Church News^[10][11][12] and is recognized as a Mormon family organization, however many members of its organization are not Mormons. In 2010, the Brough Family Organization was listed by FamilySearch as an exemplary ancestral family organization.^[13]

Reunions

Since 1918, the Brough Family Organization has held regular or periodic reunions in Utah, USA. Between 1918 and 1999, Brough Reunions were held in such locations as: Bountiful, Kaysville, Morgan, Porterville, Ogden, and Randolph, Utah; the Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington, Utah; and in Lyman, Wyoming.^{[14][15][16][17][18]} Since 2000, the Brough Family Organization has held an International Brough Reunion every five years in Kaysville, Utah.^[19] In 2008, an International Brough Reunion was held in Staffordshire, England.^[20] In 2013 a special Brough Reunion was held at the Bonneville Speedway in western Utah that celebrated Brough family history and Brough Superior Motorcycles.^[21] Prominent members and supporters of the Brough Family Organization include Monte J. Brough,^[22] who served as a general authority for the LDS Church from 1988 until his death in 2011; and R. Clayton Brough, a long-time American television weatherman and teacher.^[23]
