Brookwood High School is an American public secondary school in Snellville, Georgia with a student body of 3,421.[1] Brookwood serves several areas of Gwinnett County, Georgia, including Snellville, Lawrenceville, and Lilburn.

General Information

School hours are 7:24am to 2:10 pm. Students arrive on over 40 different buses at 6:55 each morning. Every Tuesday and Thursday, students have "Extended Lunch," in which they have one hour for lunch rather than a thirty minute study hall (called guided study) and a thirty minute lunch.

History

Planning for Brookwood High School was started in 1977 to lessen the overcrowding of nearby South Gwinnett High School and Parkview High School. A committee of educators from Gwinnett County met to create and discuss specifications for the facility. The school officially opened in 1981 under principal Emmett Lawson.

The school derived its name from its location on the intersection of Holly Brook Road (now Webb Gin House Road) and Dogwood Road. A committee of three students selected the school mascot and the colors of maroon and gold, which were based upon the colors of Florida State University. The original school mascot had a horseshoe around the bronco, which was later removed. The original mascot was a drawing of an entire bronco, but the current logo uses only a bronco's head. The runner-up mascot choice was the Bruins, and the second place color scheme was baby blue and gold.

All but one Brookwood Cluster Schools were recognized by the Governor Sonny Perdue for outstanding academic achievement in 2010. Brookwood hosted GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney on March 4, 2012 ahead of the Georgia Primary.

Athletics

Brookwood boys have won state championships in football in 1996 and 2010, and in hockey in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013. The cross country team won state championships in 2001-2003, 2009-2011, and 2013. Boys' swimming were state champions in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Boys' soccer won the state championship in 2001,2004, and 2014; while the boys' tennis team won in 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2011, 2013, and 2014. The baseball team has also won two championships, in 1986 and 2008. Boys' track won the state championship in 2010 and 2012.

Brookwood girls have also won championships in cross country (1985, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 2012), as has the soccer team in 1998 and 2003. The tennis team won the state championship in 2000, as did the softball team in 1991. The girls' track team has won five state championships, in 1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994.

Rivalries

Brookwood's main rivals are Parkview High School and Grayson High School.

Club Sports

There are a few "club sports" (unofficial school sports) at Brookwood. One of these is the Brookwood's Ultimate Frisbee team, the Inferno. These teams do compete against other high schools and in tournaments.

Fine arts and clubs

Brookwood High offers dance, chorus, theatre, a band program, and a full orchestra.

Student Government Association

SGA is by far the largest club at Brookwood. With nearly 450 members, SGA organizes and coordinates many extra- and co-curricular activities. SGA's responsibilities include decoration for homecoming, community service, school improvement, and the homecoming parade.

Literary and debate

Brookwood was the 1999 AAAA State Literary Champion [2] and the 2006 AAAAA State Debate Champion.[3]

Theatre

In 1998–1999 Brookwood finished first at the state One-Act Competition with their production of The 1940s Radio Hour. The same cast went on to perform at the International Thespian Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska that summer.

Dance

The Dance Department performs two shows a year.

Band

The school's band program consists of four separate bands. In increasing order of ability, these bands are the Maroon and Gold Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Symphonic Winds, as well as the Brookwood High School Marching Band (which contains about 250-300 students, including guard and auxiliaries), with the entire program containing around 400 students.

Orchestra

The schools's orchestra program consists of five separate orchestras. In increasing order of ability, these orchestras are: Maroon and Gold (which, like the band, rehearses in two separate class periods), Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, Symphonic Strings, and Philharmonic.

Jazz and Music Tech

The school's jazz program has grown to three full bands. There is also a Music Technology program featuring three introductory classes and an advanced class. The classroom has 25 iMac stations for MIDI music composition, using mainly the GarageBand, Reason, and Logic programs. One station is set up as a mini-recording studio.

School publications

The Brookwood High student paper is titled The Sentinel and features school, political, and entertainment articles.

The yearbook, also student-run, is called Cayuse. A literature club produces a yearly magazine, Pegasus, which is released alongside the yearbook. The magazine features short stories, essays, songs, and poetry written and submitted by students.

Science Olympiad

Brookwood High School's Science Olympiad team has won the 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Georgia State Championships.

Feeder schools

Brookwood is the high school of the Brookwood cluster, a group of schools which feed into one primary high school for an area in Gwinnett County. The middle schools that feed into Brookwood are Alton C. Crews Middle School and Five Forks Middle School.
