Brittany Howard is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of American rock band Alabama Shakes.
Early life
Howard was born in Athens, Alabama to a white mother and a black father.[1] She began playing the guitar at age 13,[4] and later attended East Limestone High School, where she met future Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell.[4]
Career
In December 2012, Howard and members of her side project Thunderbitch were robbed at gunpoint by two unknown teen assaliants. There were reportedly no injuries.[3]
Musical style
Although critics have compared her musical style to that of Janis Joplin, Howard has stated that she does not consider Joplin an influence and instead cites David Bowie, Bon Scott and Nina Simone as influences.[1][4]
