General elections were held in British Guiana in August 1957.^[1] The result was a victory for the People's Progressive Party, whose leader, Cheddi Jagan, remained Prime Minister.^[2]

After the election, the moderate faction of the PPP led by Forbes Burnham left the party to form the People's National Congress together with the United Democratic Party.^[1]
