British Association of Canadian Studies

Begun in 1975, the British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS) is one of a number of international scholarly groups dedicated to academic study of Canada. In 1981 it was one of the first to become an associate member of the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).[1] The ICCS receives Canadian federal funding and distributes some of this to associate groups.

Each year BACS publishes the British Journal of Canadian Studies. In addition BACS holds an annual conference in the UK, rotating venues between Canadian studies centres. In 2007, the annual conference was held at The University of Durham. 2008 saw the conference celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City, at The University of Warwick. In 2009, the conference is entitled 'Being, Becoming, Belonging' and is due to be held at St. Anne's College, Oxford University.
