Brightlands School (or Brightlands) is a private school located in the Dalanwala suburb of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Brightlands was established in 1958 as a school for primary students. It is now a10+2 senior-secondary level, English medium, co-educational school affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.

Mrs. Narang was the founder of the school. The school motto is Vidyaev Balam (in Sanskrit) -"Knowledge is Strength".

History

The school was established by Mrs. Narang in 1958. After her death, Mr. Ravi Narang (her son) has become the director. 12 August is a holiday at the school for Mrs. Narang's Memorial Day.

Admission

An entrance test is conducted in February every year within the school in Dehradun. Students are taken on a merit basis (and admission test).

Achievements

Board Results

Brightlands is ranked amongst the top schools in India on the basis of its results. The school's shows excellent performance in Board Examinations both in the ISC and ICSE Classes. Top positions in Dehra Dun are achieved.

In 2003 the school secured the All India 1st and 2nd Positions in the ICSE (Class X) Board Examination with an overall aggregate of 97.6% and 97.4% respectively. In 2005 the school again bagged the All India Ist and 2nd Positions, this time in the ISC (Class XII) Board Examination with an overall aggregate of 97.50% and 97.25% respectively. The 2010 results both of the ISC and ICSE Classes surpassed all previous records despite the increased number of students taking the examination. The class average of the ICSE (Class X) Board Examination, 2011 touched 88% and that of the ISC (Class XII) Board Examination was also 88%.

Scholarship

The School offers Merit Scholarships to students who have appeared for the ICSE (Class X) Examination from Brightlands and wish to rejoin the School. To be eligible, students should secure 93% or above in the overall aggregate marks, securing at least 93% in English in the Board Examination. The scholarship covers the tuition fee charged to a student in the + 2 Classes and comes into effect from April of the same year.

Facilities

Sports

Outdoor sports facilities have been augmented by fields adjoining the main school premises. Cricket, basketball, handball, football, badminton and chess are the sports being pursued in school. Physical training is compulsory for all children unless excused on medical grounds. Class X and XII have no games period.

The students of classes IV to XII are divided into four Houses which compete with each other, thereby developing an enthusiasm for sports and a spirit of healthy competition. The School Sports Day is an annual event of importance.

Co-curricular

Emphasis is laid on intramural and extra-curricular activities. The children participate in Inter-House and Inter-School competitions.

Children of classes I and II are divided into two Houses, Sunshine and Rainbow.

Social Welfare Services

Service towards humanity plays a role in building the character of students at Brightlands. Each student completes a quota of Socially Useful Productive Work or SUPW. Students make visits to local institutions viz Raphael, Prem Dham etc. to offer voluntary service. They also collect funds from within the school for relief organizations.

The School's Nature Club pursues issues such as environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and clean Doon.

Limca Book of Records Quiz, 2010

Date: 20 December 2010 Brightlands made headlines. Anmol Bhargava of class IX and Amartya Ghosh of Class X were declared the National Champions at the much coveted National Quiz Competition. A consistent and unbeatable performance was the mantra which eclipsed the performance of the other schools from all over India. The Team substantiated the saying. “The race is to the swift: The battle to the strong.”Kudos to the two boys and the strong hold of an intense quizzing climate, vibrant and effectively projected by a group of instructors setting and instilling the right tenor in the mindset of the young quizzers. It was really a commendable task for the team to clear the two preliminary rounds and then reach the finals hosted by The Birla School at Kolkata. Both team members were awarded a laptop and an individual trophy. The School is the proud recipient of the Winning Trophy which is yet another landmark in its infinite records of winnings.

Business Stimulation Exercise Online Competition

Organizer: The King’s University, Ontario, Canada The B.S.E. Online Competition held in India for the first time exposed the students to a unique challenge, spread over a span of eight weeks. A virtual company was created and two products were launched online. The competitors were on the test for their decision making skills related to matters in Finance, Marketing and Research and Development. Twenty one of the best schools from all over the country were in the fray. The Brightlands Team, composed of Siddhant Ahuja, Asees Singh, Nipun Nagrath, and Jainder Singh Mann secured the All India 8th Position. The team members were awarded a certificate and the school received a plaque.

The Divine Life Society Inter School Essay Writing Competition

Date: October 28, 2010; Topic: Crisis of Character: Ways and Means to cure it. Arushi Mittal and Shikha Chaudhary were declared the First and Second Prize Winners and were awarded Rupees Three Thousand and Two Thousand respectively along with a Certificate and a set of books. The fact that the first and second prize winners were from Brightlands, speaks volumes of not only the profound value system imbibed in the students, but also their mindset for they had the potential to gauge and decipher the malady, sweeping across the country and were able to impress upon the judges the means to overcome it.

'Ma Tujhe Pranam'

August, 2010; Organizer: Amar Ujala To commemorate the 63rd year of Independence, Amar Ujala organized an Inter School Competition, incorporating Slogan Writing, Essay Writing, Drawing and Painting. The Students of Brightlands excelled in all the three activities. The School was awarded the Runner Up Trophy and each Team Member was presented a Certificate for participation. The individual prize winners were the proud recipients of a handsome Individual Trophy. Suramy Gosain VIII Danube and Arohi Arora VII Nalanda, were awarded the 1st & 3rd Positions respectively for the Slogan Writing Competition. Somya Dhulia VI Valour won the 2nd Prize in the Essay Writing Competition. Ananya Malhotra VIII Cauvery & Diya Saigal VI Valour were declared the best and the second best in the stiffly contested Drawing Competition.

Inter-School English Debate, Quiz, Drawing and Painting Competition

August, 2010 The Indian Society of Remote Sensing organised an Inter-School English Debate, Quiz and Drawing & Painting Competition. In all the three spheres of the Competition, Brightlands proved itself once again, making a clean sweep in all the three categories, thereby clinching the much deserved Trophy. Anchit Dogra, XI Quest and Abhijay Negi, XII Darwin secured the First and the Third Positions in the English Debate Competition. Amartya Ghosh, X Tagore and Chinmay Lohani, X Tagore both secured the First Position at the Quiz Competition while Shalabh Kumar, XII Einstein and Aanchal Singh, IX Raman secured First and Second Positions respectively in the Drawing and Painting Competition.

The 25th Maharaja Judh Shumsher J.B. Rana Memorial Inter School Debate

August, 2010; Organizer: Cambrian Hall; Speakers: 1. Siddhant Ahuja 2. Abhijay Negi The topic was given to the competitors one hour prior to the commencement of the competition. Both the speakers excelled in their content and delivery of speech, on a topic that is sensitive to the youth of today. ‘Reservation in excess will lose its utility and prove counter productive’. Brightlands was awarded the Trophy. Siddhant Ahuja was declared The 'Best Speaker' of the Day and was honoured with a Silver Salver.

Brightlands Brims with Creative Expression in

The Albert Barrow All India Creative Writing Competition

Swarnima Gupta's essay titled 'The need for Environmental Education in the 21st Century' was adjudged the Best Script in Category II (Classes IX & X) among all the essays from the ISC Schools country wide. This is for the second time in three years that Brightlands has bagged the First Prize. It is indeed commendable that the School's second entry - the essay written by Rakshita Goyal, IX Raman, also secured a position among the first ten best scripts nation wide. Both these scripts featured in the Albert Barrow Magazine, 2009 published by the Council annually. Swarnima was honoured at an Award Giving Ceremony organised by the Council at the City Montessori School, Lucknow on September 25, 2009. The School was awarded the prestigious trophy. The Results of the 2010 Competition held in May were declared in August 2010 and once again we are proud to state that our script will feature in the Albert Barrow Magazine published by the Council. Congratulations to Kaustubh Chaturvedi of class IX Raman, whose essay titled, ‘It takes all kinds to make the World’, secured a Position amongst the first ten best scripts. It is for the Seventh consecutive year that the school has been acknowledged for its ingenuity in writing skills. By no means a coincidence.

Inter-School Geeta Chanting Competition

Date: August 21 & 22, 2010; Venue: Chinmaya Mission, Dehra Dun; Organiser: Chinmaya Mission, Dehra Dun

The Brightlands Team was declared the Overall Winner of the Competition and was awarded the Trophy. Cash prizes worth Rs. 800/-, Rs.500/- and Rs. 300/- were awarded to the First, Second and Third Position holders respectively along with a Certificate and a Gift. A participation Certificated was presented to each contestant. After two successive hat-tricks, Brightlanders well known for their chanting skills, won the Coveted Trophy for the seventh time in succession.

Oxford Dictionary Quiz

August, 2010; Organiser: Touchwood School An Inter School Competition covering a wide range of activities. Anagrams, Spellaton, Guess the word through a mime and relate it to a simile, Rapid fire round of guessing adjectives and finally Testing of skills to find the meaning of words in a Dictionary. Brightlands was awarded the Runner Up Trophy along with several individual prizes. Vamika Jain and Pragun Ahuja both V Jhelum represented the School as a Team.

Senior School Investiture Ceremony August, 2010

In a solemn ceremony conducted on August 31, 2010; the new School Captains, the Student Council and the Prefect Body was sworn in for the year 2010-2011. The function commenced with a speech delivered by the Principal, Ms. P. Thapliyal followed by the Saraswati Vandana. Mrs.C. Saraswat announced the names of the newly elected students as each received their Sashes and Badges. The outgoing Head Boy, Abhijay Negi and Head Girl, Atreyi Bhattacharya handed over the School Flag and Torch to the new incumbents, Siddhant Ahuja and Swarnima Gupta. The Prefect Body was called upon to take the Oath - a commitment made to discharge their duties faithfully and honestly; to uphold the honour of the School and keep the ideals and values intact. An impressive ceremony marked the occasion and finally the School Song, profuse in its commitment and ethos sealed the function.

NSTSE 2010: Excellence Exemplified

Brightlands stands firm in its superior ranking in the NSTSE 2010, conducted by The Unified Council. Having been adjudged ‘The Best Performance School’ for the 6th consecutive year on the basis of the outstanding scores of the students, Brightlands comes out unparalleled yet again! A proud Arohi Arora, VII Nalanda, secured the All India 2nd Position and was awarded a Gold Medal and a Laptop. Last year as well in the NSTSE 2009, Shiven Kumar, IV Iris had secured the All India 1st Position.

The All India Scholastic Creative Writing Competition

Devika Gupta and Rakshita Goyal participated in the All India Creative Writing Competition organised by Scholastic India Limited. Their Short Stories were published in The Best of Scholastic Creative Writing 2009, in a book titled 'By Kids, For Kids'.

Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas Programme

Organiser : Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency Saara Alam Bora, VII Taxila and Nidhi Tomar, VI Esteem secured the First Position in the Slogan Writing Competition and received a Cash Prize of Rs. 800/- each, in the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas Programme. As a part of the same Programme, Anisha R. Vijan, VII Taxila stood First in the Art Competition and Pranati Grover of VII Nalanda stood Second. They were awarded a Cash Prize of Rs. 800/- & Rs. 500/-, respectively. The School was awarded the Overall Trophy.

Inter-School Chess Tournament, 2010

September, 2010; Venue: Ann Mary School Khwaab Bansal, XII Einstein, Our Grand Master in the making has won the Championship for the seventh consecutive year. Indeed an unbeatable record. He was awarded the Championship Trophy. Swarnima Gupta, XI Infinity, was declared the Runner Up in the Senior Girls Category. She was awarded a Trophy. The Brightlands Team bagged the Overall Trophy.

Limca Book of Records Quiz, 2010

Date: April 20, 2010 Two hundred and eighty four students from forty eight prestigious schools in and around Dehra Dun participated in the Written Round of the Quiz. Three teams represented Brightlands and secured the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the Written Round. However, since only one team per school was permitted to represent the school, Team I, comprising Anmol Bhargava and Amartya Ghosh, qualified for the Stage Round.

Anmol and Amartya beat their nearest contender Welham Girls School and kept the Brightlands flag flying high. They were declared the City Champions.

State Level G.K. Competition

Date: January 9, 2011 Somya Dhuliya, VI Valour secured the first position in the Sub-Junior Category. A Cash Prize of Rs.1100/- was awarded to her.

Doon Ice Skating Open Championship, 2010

Date: December 21 to 24, 2010 The students participated in the various events and brought laurels to the School. Swasti Bhambri, IV Orchid was awarded the Silver and Bronze medal and a Cash Prize of Rs.25000/-. Snehashish Tiwari, IV Orchid won the Silver medal and a Cash Prize of Rs.15000/-. Snehashish also participated in the National Ice Skating Championship held at Shimla from 3 to 5 January 2011 and Arshia Kapoor, III Dolphin participated in the Figure Skating Event and Speed Skating Event.

On the Spot Painting Competition

Date: December 9, 2010; Venue: MKP College, Dehra Dun; Organizer: Lions’ Club, Dehra Dun The Brightlands team was represented in all three categories and the students did the school proud by winning prizes at all levels. The Overall Trophy was awarded to Brightlands.

Bal Ratan Khoj 2010

Organiser : The Kabir Peace Mission and Amity University Lucknow. In an endeavour to nurture talent and values. In an exceptional pre-eminent performance Amartya Ghosh, Rishi Mudgil, Navjote Singh, Zaid Bin Afroz and Shaurya P.Singh qualified three extremely difficult rounds. A remarkable achievement indeed, to beat out 75,000 entrants from all over the country. Finally 116 students made it to the contest held at Lucknow. Amartya Ghosh was the star performer securing the 1st Position a cash prize of Rs.15,000 and Rishi Mudgil secured the 6th Position a cash prize of Rs.3,000. Kudos to our quizzers. It is for the second consecutive year that Brightlands has retained its hold on this quiz and steadfastly kept its 1st Position.

Dusshera Celebrations

'Victory of good over evil' It's festival time - the feeling of good times are here again. There's festivity in the air. A collection of mythological legends and regional tales are embroidered around Dusshera. For the students of Brightlands the enactment of the myth was a rich learning experience. Excerpts from the Ramleela were brought on stage, with a zest and enthusiasm portrayed by Kashika Mahajan as Sita, Vidhu Vasav Singh Gill as Ravan and Aditya Bhatt as Hanuman. Not to mention the vanar sena and the final gaiety brought in by the dancers, who had the audience tapping their feet and clapping their hands to their lilting tune.

Maggi Good Food Quiz 2010

An Intra School Event open to classes IV to VI organised by Nestle India Ltd. In the written round around 650 students participated and finally 12 students made it to the final round. These students were divided into 6 teams. Team A, E and D excelled in their performance and were awarded the First, Second and Third positions respectively. The six students were presented with certificates and gift hampers. Team A - 1st Sulaksh Swami class VI Valour, Pragun Ahuja Class V Jhelum T eam E - 2nd Sarthak Chauhan class V Chenab, Minza Shahid IV Iris Team D - 3rd Rashmeet T. Singh VI Honour, Tegpreet S. Chawla IV Iris An excellent and inspiring quizzing experience for the team members and the audience.

Teacher's Day 2010

The school was brought to life by the creative talent of the children. They showered their love, affection and gratefulness by staging a fun filled morning of events ranging from the Saraswati Vandana, lilting songs, foot tapping numbers and elaborate dances, culminating in thoughtfully planned games involving all the staff members, reinforcing the bond of love and friendship they share.

School Quiz Fest 2010

In the Selaqui International School Quiz Fest held on November 18, 2010, the Junior team, composed of Kaustubh Chaturvedi IX Raman, T.M. Ravikiran VIII Danube, and Aakash Kapoor VII Nalanda, won the Best Team Prize. Each member was awarded a cup, a certificate and a book hamper.

It was a close contest with eight schools participating. Our team proved it that perseverance and the untiring effort of their Quiz teacher Mrs. Vasu Pant paid them rich dividends.

Annual Marathon 2010

It was inspiring to see an enthusiastic batch of Brightlanders from Class VIII, IX & XI in the early hours of the morning to make it to the roads of Dalanwala. Running goes beyond health, builds self-confidence, perseverance and ultimately optimism. It unleashes the potential in a child. Keeping these gospels in mind the marathon has become an Annual feature.
