Brendan Gibbons (born August 15, 1991) is a former American football placekicker for the University of Michigan. After his senior year at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, Gibbons played as a kicker in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January 2009, making a 35-yard field goal and three-of-four PATs.[1] He has completed his redshirt senior season a starter for the 2013 Michigan Wolverines football team.[2] He was a 2012 All-Big Ten honorable mention selection.

Recruiting and commitment

Gibbons attended Cardinal Newman High School, coached by Don Dicus and as a left-footed kicker played defensive end, fullback and linebacker during his career. He was a two-year varsity letterman, hitting 16-of-21 career field goals and notched touchbacks on 90 percent of his kickoffs in his two years. As a senior, converting 10 of his 12 field goals with a long of 52 yards, seven of which were from 40 yards or longer. Shared the 2008 Lou Groza Award as the Palm Beach County High School Place-Kicker of the Year Award and was also a finalist for the award as a junior. Named to the Special Teams Solutions Elite Class of 2009, recipient of the 2009 High School Maxwell Award for his excellence on the field and in the community. Received first-team all-state honors following junior and senior years. Rated as the No. 8 kicker in the nation by Rivals.com[3] and three-star prospect and the No. 11 kicker nationally according to Scout.com.[4] He committed to Michigan on November 13, 2008.[5] He was a 2012 All-Big Ten honorable mention selection by both the coaches and the media for the 2012 Wolverines.[6][7]

Controversy

On November 20, 2009, Gibbons was arrested by the Ann Arbor police department under rape charges.[8] No criminal charges were filed by the police.[9][10] The event was covered in the campus newspaper however the University of Michigan has made no public comments at the time.[11][12]

According to a report in The Michigan Daily, Gibbons was "permanently separated" from the school effective December 20, 2013 after a sexual-misconduct investigation.
