"Break the Rules" is a song by English recording artist Charli XCX, released as the second single from her second studio album, Sucker. The song was premiered on XCX's SoundCloud account on 18 August 2014, and a music video was released on 25 August 2014.

The song was released in the UK on 12 October 2014. Cosmopolitan listed "Break the Rules" at number 5 on its 2014 best songs list.[2]

Break the Rules is an electro punk, synthpop and pop punk song.[3] Jon Pareles from the New York Times noted elements of grunge and trance in the song. Lyrically, it strikes similarities to 2004 single "Billy S." by Canadian singer-songwriter Skye Sweetnam

Release

Break the Rules was released in 18 August 2014, with the intention of being the second single from Charli XCX's third studio album and second major-label album, Sucker, with a planned official single release to contemporary hit radio by Atlantic Records on 7 October 2014.[4] Sucker was originally scheduled for release on 21 October 2014, but on 22 September 2014, XCX announced that the release date for the album had been postponed to 15 December 2014.[5]

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Marc Klasfeld[6] and was released on YouTube on 25 August 2014.[7] The video includes references to films such as Carrie, The Craft, and Jawbreaker and to the animated sitcom The Simpsons.[8] It features a cameo from Rose McGowan, the star of Jawbreaker.[9]
