Bradford L. Hewitt
Bradford Hewitt is the president and CEO of Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 faith-based membership organization, the nation’s largest fraternal benefit society and one of the 10 largest mutual insurance companies in the United States.[1]
Early years
Hewitt was born in 1961[2] and is a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota.[1]
Education
Hewitt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, with a minor in economics. In 1995 he finished the Harvard Graduate School of Business Program for Management Development.[1]
Business career
In 1982 Hewitt began his business career with Minnesota Mutual Life (now known as Securian) in the Actuarial Services department. In 1986 he became the director of underwriting for Charter Med, which is now UnitedHealth Group-UHG. In 1993 Hewitt became the CFO of a UHG subsidiary, Diversified Pharmaceutical Services, now known as Express Scripts, and later served as president and CEO, until 1998.[1]
Lutheran Church work
In 1998 Hewitt became the chief administrative officer of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Saint Louis, a position he held until 2003.[2] In 2003 he joined Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as senior vice president of fraternal operations. He also was the president of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. Hewitt was promoted to the position of chief operation officer in 2008.[2]
On January 20, 2010 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced that their board of directors named Hewitt as the new president and chief executive officer, replacing the retiring chairman, president and chief executive officer Bruce Nicholson, to take effect as of February 1, 2010.[3]
Affiliations
Hewitt serves on the board of Lutheran World Relief and the faith-based organization Lutheran Services in America.[2] He also is on the board of regents of Concordia University in Saint Paul, Minnesota; the board of Habitat for Humanity International and the American Council of Life Insurers. Hewitt volunteers as co-chairman for the Itasca “Mind the Gap” initiative promoting leadership in the Twin Cities area. Hewitt belongs to the Alley Midway Church in urban Saint Paul.[1]
Personal life
Hewitt is married to Sue and lives in Medicine Lake, Minnesota. They have two grown children.[1]
