Boston Borough Council election, 2015
Elections for Boston Borough Council, which covers the Borough of Boston, are due to be held on Thursday 7 May 2015.[1] Following recent changes to the ward boundaries, 30 councillors will be elected from 15 wards. This is on the same day as other local elections.
Composition of council seats before election
After the 2011 election, 19 councillors were Conservatives, 4 were Boston Bypass Independents, 4 were Independents, 3 were Labour and 2 were English Democrats.
Since then, the 4 Boston Bypass Independents have changed their alignment to ‘Independent’. Two Conservative councillors have become ‘unaligned’. One English Democrat resigned and UKIP won the subsequent by-election. One Conservative councillor died in office and UKIP won the subsequent by-election.
The two elected UKIP councillors later defected to the Lincolnshire Independents.
- Two councillors are classified as unaligned so, in effect, they sit as independents.
Candidates by party
Boston Borough Council has 15 wards with a total of 30 councillors. In this election, there are a total of 83 candidates standing (a decrease of 12% from the 95 candidates in the last election in 2011).
The two parties with incumbent councillors are the Conservatives and Labour. The Conservatives are standing in all wards, with a total of 26 candidates. Labour are standing 19 candidates in 12 wards. 15 Independents are standing. 11 of these are sitting councillors.
Out of the other parties standing, UKIP have 18 candidates in 30 wards, the Green Party have 4 candidates in 4 wards and the Liberal Democrats have a single candidate standing in Witham Ward.
