Bonny Norton

Bonny Norton is a professor and distinguished university scholar at the University of British Columbia. Her research areas include identity and language learning, critical literacy, and international development. Norton is a theorist and scholar in the area of identity and language learning, and her book Identity and Language Learning (2000/2013) has contributed to this area. Since 2003 Norton has carried out a number of research projects in Uganda on identity and language learning, also focusing on gender, health, and technology in relation to language and identity. She is Research Advisor of the African Storybook Project and co-founder of the Africa Research Network on Applied Linguistics and Literacy. Norton was born and raised in South Africa but has lived in Canada since 1988.

Education

Norton has both a BA and Higher Diploma in Education in English and History from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, as well as a BA Honours from the same university. Her MA in Linguistics is from Reading University, England, while she received her PhD from Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, graduating in 1993..[1]

Career

Norton worked as a teacher, language tutor, and assistant examiner before commencing her PhD studies. In 1996 she joined UBC as an assistant professor, and in 2004 she became a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar.[1]

Publications

Norton’s book Identity and language learning: Gender, ethnicity and educational change from 2000 was published in a second edition under the title Identity and language learning: Extending the conversation in 2013. In addition she has co-edited three books: Language and HIV/AIDS (with C. Higgins, 2010); Critical pedagogies and language learning (with K. Toohey, 2004); and Gender and English language learners (with A. Pavlenko, 2004).

Norton’s refereed journal publications include "Social identity, investment, and language learning" and "Language, identity, and the ownership of English," both in TESOL Quarterly.[1]
