Bonnie Tiburzi (born 31 August 1948), is an American aviator. She became the first female pilot for a commercial airline in the United States when she was hired by American Airlines in 1973.

Early life

Bonnie Tiburzi Caputo was born Bonnie Linda Tiburzi.[1] She was born August 31, 1948 in Connecticut.[2] Her father owned Tiburzi Airlines.

Career

In 1973, at age 24, she became the first female pilot for American Airlines and the first female pilot for a major American commercial airline.[2] She flew the Boeing 727. In 1986 Tiburzi wrote the autobiography, Takeoff: The Story of America's First Woman Pilot for a Major Airline.[3] She retired from AA in 1999.[4]

Awards and recognition

Tiburzi has been featured in the history of women in aerospace and aviation[5] and the history of American Airlines.[4] The National Women's History Museum honored her with one of the first "Women Making History" Awards.[6]
