Elmo Kennedy O'Connor (born January 11, 1994), better known as Bones (stylized as BONES) and formerly Th@ Kid, is an American rapper from Muir Beach, California.[2] He is notable for the frenetic pace at which he releases new music, including over 40 mixtapes[3][4] and more than 70 music videos since 2011, and his resistance to signing with a major record label (or charging money for his music), despite significant popularity and label interest.[5][6]

Life and career

Personal life

Elmo Kennedy O'Connor was born January 11, 1994 in Muir Beach, California, to his mother who designed clothing and his father who was a photographer and web designer.[7] His grandfather was actor Robert Culp, and his uncle is a vocal coach for musical artists including Justin Timberlake.[8]

Musical career

Bones started recording music and filming music videos when he was as young as 7. In 2011, when he was 16 he dropped out of school in Howell, Michigan, and moved to Los Angeles with his brother Elliott to pursue a career in music under the moniker Th@ Kid (he changed his stage name to Bones in 2013). He has collaborated on three tracks with Raider Klan member Eddy Baker, including “High”, “Delinquents”, and “PayPal” off of Bones’s mixtape's SATURN (2013), CREEP (2013), and Garbage (2014). Bones also performs and collaborates often with Xavier Wulf, another former Raider Klan member.[9][10]

In 2014, Bones self-released 5 mixtapes through his label TeamSESH, including Garbage, which received coverage and critical acclaim from notable publications including The Fader, Pigeons & Planes, and RESPECT..[11][12][13]

Bones headlined a sold out show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on March 4, 2015.[14][15][16] He is scheduled to open for Shlohmo at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on May 7, 2015.[17]

Major label interest

Bones and his manager Elliott O’Connor have both stated that major labels have shown interest in signing him, but he has declined up to this point. According to Max Bell of LA Weekly, "interested labels wanted him to be their 'white rapper,' an artist along the lines of Mac Miller and Machine Gun Kelly. But Bones wasn't interested in being remade.”[18]

Musical style

Bones's style has been compared to Yung Lean and a brand of internet rap called "cloud rap" in which the beats are ethereal and rappers are emotional and sincere, rather than completely macho.[19][20]
