Pieter van Jaarsveld, known publicly as Bobby van Jaarsveld (born 6 March 1987) is a South African Afrikaans language pop singer-songwriter and actor. He is best known for his song Spieëltjie and his role in the South African film Liefling - Die Movie.

Early life

Van Jaarsveld was born on 6 March 1987 in Paarl. He matriculated from Brits High School.[1]

Music

Bobby van Jaarsveld joined the music industry at the beginning of his Grade 12 year when his first solo album was released by Bler Music in South Africa.

Van Jaarsveld received three nominations for Best Newcomer in 2006, from the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, from local music magazine, Vonk, and from Huisgenoot Tempo magazine. Van Jaarsveld won the category Best Newcomer at South African festival Skouspel Extravaganza, hosted annually by Huisgenoot at Sun City in the Super Bowl. As winner of this category, he performed at the festival, and continued to do so from 2007 to 2011.

In November 2006, Theuns Jordaan Productions offered van Jaarsveld a recording contract. His first album, 'n Duisend Ure (English: Thousand Hours) was repacked and redistributed with a new look and sound. Album sales reached gold in March 2008. In May 2008, van Jaarsveld began to perform with his own band.

His second album, Net Vir Jou (English: Only for You), was released in October 2013 by Coleske Artists. All tracks on the album were written and composed by van Jaarsveld. Album sales reached platinum status within eight weeks, and have since reached double platinum status with sales of 83,500 units. Songs from the album include Spieeltjie (English: Mirror) and Net Vir Jou, and music videos were created for both tracks.[2][3]

In January 2010, van Jaarsveld was awarded the Viewers' Favourite Artist award for 2009 on DKNT, a local music program on DStv.

Film

Van Jaarsveld acted as the lead character in the Afrikaans film Liefling – Die Movie, which was released in November 2010 by Hartiwood Studios South Africa. The film had a total of 460,000 viewers and fetched R16 million at the box office. He also starred in the film As Jy Sing in 2013.[4]

Personal life

Van Jaarsveld is a professed Christian. He is married and has two sons, Sion and Leben.[5] His sister, Karlien van Jaarsveld, is also a singer.
