Boban "Bobi" Marjanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Бобан Марјановић; born August 15, 1988) is a Serbian professional basketball player who plays for Crvena zvezda Belgrade of the Serbian League. He also represented the Serbian national basketball team in the international competitions. Standing at 2.23 m (7 ft 4 in), he plays the center position.
Professional career
Early years
Marjanović began his professional career with Hemofarm in the 2006–07 season of the Adriatic League, but was loaned to Basketball League of Serbia team Swisslion Takovo in January 2007. After half a season there, he moved back to Hemofarm. In the following seasons, he played an important role for his team together with his teammates from the national team, Stefan Marković and Milan Mačvan.
2010–2012
In the summer of 2010, Marjanović signed a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow on insistence of Duško Vujošević.[1] However, after Vujošević got fired, Marjanović lost his place in the first team. On December 31, 2010, he was loaned to Žalgiris until the end of the 2010–11 season.[2]
In July 2011, he signed with Nizhny Novgorod,[3] staying there for half a season. In January 2012, he returned to Serbia and signed with Radnički Kragujevac for the rest of the 2011–12 season.[4]
Mega Vizura
In July 2012, he signed a contract with the Serbian team Mega Vizura for the 2012–13 season.[5] He had a great season, and was named the MVP of the Serbian League.[6]
Crvena zvezda
On July 2, 2013, Marjanović signed a two-year contract with Crvena zvezda Belgrade.[7][8] In December 2013, he was named the Euroleague MVP for Round 10.[9] In April 2014, alongside with his teammate DeMarcus Nelson, he was selected for the ideal team of the 2013–14 ABA League season.[10][11]
In the first game of 2014–15 Euroleague season, Marjanović led his team to 76–68 victory against Galatasaray, scoring 22 points and pulling 10 rebounds in 28 minutes on the court.[12] He was later named the Euroleague MVP for Round 1.[13] On November 22, 2014, he recorded 23 points and career-high 17 rebounds for a total index rating of 39, in a double overtime 103–110 loss against Galatasaray.[14] At the time, his 17 rebounds in a single game was a highest number of rebounds by any player in the three-seasons span of the Euroleague.[15] For his performances he was named MVP of the Euroleague regular season.[16]
On April 9, in a game against Panathinaikos, he set the Euroleague record for the most rebounds in a single season with 256, passing the previous record of Mirsad Türkcan who had 248 rebounds in a 2002–03 Euroleague season.[17] He also set the Euroleague record for the most double-doubles in a season with 16, passing the previous record of Tanoka Beard who had 14 in a 2004–05 Euroleague season.[17] Over 24 Euroleague games, he averaged all career-high 16.6 points, league-leading 10.7 rebounds and 25.7 in PIR.[17][18]
Serbian national team
As a junior national team player, Marjanović won the gold medals at the 2007 World U19 Championship and the 2008 European U20 Championship. He was on candidate list before the EuroBasket 2009 and the 2010 FIBA World Championship, but did not get in the final 12-man squad. His senior team debut at major tournament came at the EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania, where Serbia finished 8th.
