Blumhouse Productions
Blumhouse Productions is an American movie production company, founded and run by Jason Blum. Blumhouse produces micro- and low-budget genre movies like the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister franchises.[1]
Overview
According to various stories, the company’s model is to produce these movies independently and then release them wide through the studio system.[2] Blumhouse has a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.[3] Blumhouse’s highly profitable credits began with Paranormal Activity, which was made for $15,000. The film was released by Paramount Pictures and grossed over $193 million worldwide.[4] Blumhouse produced the Paranormal sequels, Insidious which grossed over $97 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5m,[5] and Sinister, which so far has grossed over $87 million worldwide on a budget of $3 million.[6] Blumhouse has worked with directors like Scott Derrickson, James DeMonaco, Oren Peli, Scott Stewart and James Wan. Blumhouse's films include its first for Universal—The Purge starring Ethan Hawke—which debuted on June 7, 2013,[7] Insidious: Chapter Two, released on September 13, 2013[8] and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones on January 3, 2014.[9] Blumhouse’s upcoming films opening in 2014 include Jessabelle for Lionsgate on August 29,[10] Stretch on March 21, The Purge: Anarchy on July 18, and Mercy. Blumhouse also has scheduled The Boy Next Door for January 23, 2015.
On the television side, Blumhouse has a first look deal with Lionsgate, produced Stranded for SyFy and executive produced The River for ABC.[11][12]
For Halloween 2012, Blumhouse opened the Blumhouse of Horrors, an interactive haunted house experience in Downtown Los Angeles.[13]
