Blueair is a Swedish technology company that innovates, designs and manufactures indoor air purifiers for people who are concerned about the quality of air they breathe at home or work.[1] Blueair air purifiers are sold in over 50 countries around the world, with the largest markets being China, the United States and Japan.
History
Blueair was founded in 1996 in Stockholm by Bengt Rittri, who had earlier worked for Electrolux. He, together with Johan Wennerström, a Licentiate of Energy Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology and expert in filter development, designed and developed the first Blueair air purifiers.
Today Blueair is a leading world air purification brand with sales in over 50 countries in Europe, Asia and North America.[2] According to a Euromonitor study from 2011, Blueair already in 2010 had grown into one of the top five air cleaning brands in the US.[3] In 2011, Blueair was also ranked one of the top five air purifier brands in China, according to a study made by the Chinese magazine.
Products
Blueair manufactures a broad range of portable air purifiers for cleaning indoor air of pollen, pet dander, mold spores, smoke, dust and other airborne pollutants. The air purifiers use a patented technology called HEPASilent.[4] The technology combines mechanical and electrical forces by using a fan, a filter and ionization.[5] The fan pulls the air into the unit where it goes through an ionization chamber, where ions charge the particles in the air.[6] That makes the particles more easily cling to the filter before the air is pushed back out to the room.
Blueair Sense
Blueair Sense is a motion-controlled smart indoor air purifier innovated in Sweden by Blueair AB. It is the second generation of the Blueair indoor HepaSilent air purifiers family first launched in 1996. The Sense was designed by Sweden’s Claesson Koivisto Rune architectural and design agency. Since being launched the Sense has gathered a large array of international design awards, including in March 2013, a ‘red dot: best of the best award’. The ‘red dot’ awards, organized annually by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany, are considered the world’s most renowned product design competition recognizing outstanding product design and celebrating the team behind the concept. Sense has already been honored by Japan’s Institute of Design Promotion, Sweden’s ‘Design S’ awards and the 2012 Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.
Press and Media Coverage
Blueair has received widespread press in recent years with features on USA Today, ABC and featuring in O, The Oprah Magazine.[7][8]
