Bloomberg Government, also known as BGOV, is an online subscription service that provides news, data, references, analysis and workflow tools to policy makers and their staffs, federal procurement professionals, and government relations executives.[1] Owned by Bloomberg L.P., the service is part of the company’s industry verticals and was launched in January 2011.[2]

History

Bloomberg Government launched in 2011 as a comprehensive solution to eliminate multiple government information resources. According to The New York Times, the service was developed to provide news and information about politics, along with the less "glamorous" aspects of government reporting including legislative and regulatory coverage.[3]

The first stages of what is now Bloomberg Government began in 2009 when a team lead by Chris Walters and Don Baptiste spent most of the year researching to find a solution to match market needs and after two years of market sizing, the product was launched.[4] Bloomberg Government is now currently used by Congressional offices, trade associations, federal contractors, lobbyists and corporate government affairs professionals.[1]

Staff

Bloomberg implemented an aggressive recruiting strategy to staff Bloomberg Government in Washington, D.C. which included hiring industry analysts, political staff, product developers and a business development team. The business is currently organized in two primary segments focused on serving government affairs professionals and federal contractors, respectively.[3][5]

Don Baptiste serves as the head of Bloomberg Government.[3]

Bloomberg Government is a workflow tool focused on three types of users: government affairs professionals, federal contractors and congressional staff. Similar to other Bloomberg products, subscribers receive full access to all features and functionality for one price.

Government Affairs
Bloomberg Government provides subscribers in the government affairs industry a single point of access to a variety of news information and data sources including news alerts, legislative and regulatory developments, federal directories, committee transcripts, access to reports from Bloomberg BNA and publications covering homeland security, labor, energy, finance, healthcare, technology and telecom, tax and trade.[6]

Federal Contractors
Procurement professionals subscribing to Bloomberg Government access federal contract budget data through the product's proprietary databases, search tools and expert analysis. The Contracts Intelligence Tool allows subscribers to search and sort through the government's federal procurement data system in ways not available on the government's procurement data portal.[7][8]

Congressional Staff
Bloomberg Government is a workflow offering for staff members on Capitol Hill which includes instant legislative updates and news alerts, constituent data, daily newsletters, bill summaries, committee transcripts, congressional directories and dear colleague letters.[9]

Awards

In its inaugural year, Bloomberg Government received a Knight-Batten Award for Innovation in Journalism for combining interactive data, analytics and reporting that quantifies the business impacts of government action.[10]

Bloomberg Government convenes proprietary and underwritten events. Recent event topics range from cybersecurity to defense spending, to immigration and trade policy.[11]

Recent speakers at Bloomberg Government events include: Senators John McCain, Ted Cruz, Saxby Chambliss, and Bob Corker; Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Bill Schuster, Randy Forbes and Adam Smith; Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Michael Daniel, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James, former Director of the National Security Agency Keith Alexander, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, former Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner, and former Governors Haley Barbour and Ed Rendell.[12][13][14][15][16]

Bloomberg Government’s flagship event, the BGOV200, is built around an annual report ranking the top 200 federal contractors by value of prime, unclassified contracts across 24 agencies and departments, and in 20 categories of federal purchases.[17]
