The Blacklick Valley School District covers the Boroughs of Nanty-Glo and Vintondale and Blacklick Township in Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

About BVSD

The school district was established in 1967, merging the Blacklick Township and Vintondale School Districts. District enrollment is around 662 students, with 289 attending the Jr.-Sr. High School and 373 attending the Elementary Center.

Academic achievement

U.S. News & World Report released its list of Best High Schools for 2012. Data was analyzed from 21,766 public high schools in 49 states. U.S. News awards gold, silver, and bronze medals based on data measuring student performance on state proficiency tests in the areas of Mathematics and Reading. These statistics also included the demographic influence on the results. A final criterion that was considered was college readiness.
2% of the schools received Gold Medal recognition, 7% earned Silver Medals, and 13% obtained Bronze Medal status. Based on the data collected by U.S. News, Blacklick Valley Jr. Sr. High School was awarded a Bronze Medal and is being recognized among the top 22% of high schools in the nation based on this data for 2012. The 2012 Guide to Western Pennsylvania Schools ranked Blacklick Valley School District 357th out of 501 Pennsylvania school districts, moving up from their previous 381st position in 2011. In 2010, the school district ranked 405th out of 498 Pennsylvania districts by the Pittsburgh Business Times.[1] The ranking is based on three years of student academic achievement as demonstrated by PSSAs results in: reading, writing, math and two years of science.

College remediation: According to a Pennsylvania Department of Education study released in January 2009, 10% of Blacklick Valley School District graduates required remediation in mathematics and or reading before they were prepared to take college level courses in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education or community colleges.[9] Less than 66% of Pennsylvania high school graduates, who enroll in a four-year college in Pennsylvania, will earn a bachelor's degree within six years. Among Pennsylvania high school graduates pursuing an associate degree, only one in three graduate in three years.[10] Per the Pennsylvania Department of Education, one in three recent high school graduates who attend Pennsylvania's public universities and community colleges takes at least one remedial course in math, reading or English.
